The sport of golf hasn’t been blossoming for Justin Thomas in recent weeks. The golfer has struggled to keep up with his fellow competitors. Nonetheless, as JT looks to defend his PGA Championship title against the best golfers in the world, he has some words of motivation for himself despite the downfall in his form.

Thomas had a poor start to the 2022-23 PGA Tour season. The 30-year-old has started in 11 events and only finished in the top 10 twice. Moreover, Justin also failed to make the cut at last month’s Masters. While the troubling form may hurt many golfers mentally, JT had some wise words ahead of the second Major of the season.

As the best golfers in the world head to Oak Hil Country Club to win the PGA Championship, Justin will be eager to defend his Wanamaker Trophy. Ahead of the Major, reporters asked the golfer about his recent poor form in the press conference. However, JT reinstated his positive mindset by recalling his T-14 finish at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship.

I felt like I showed a lot of really good signs in Charlotte”, said Justin. He started the PGA Tour event with 3 under par in the first round and had another promising -4 score in the next round. However, Justin Thomas claimed that his 1 under 70 in the third round was his most encouraging 18 holes in recent weeks. He said, “It just was a round where I didn’t really have very much. I felt like I left a couple shots out there putting-wise and just wasn’t sharp”.

Thomas continued to say that he had ‘very poor wedges and irons’ during the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship. However, he was happy to end the round with a birdie on the 15th and 16th hole despite the Quail Hollow Golf Club being a ‘tough golf course’. Despite a decent round to his caliber, Justin was happy with himself as his caddie murmured some wise words into his ears.

Thomas looks back to winning ways

As Justin was sharing about regaining his confidence at the Wells Fargo Championship, his caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay told him during the round that ‘this is the stuff that we haven’t been doing this year”. While speaking at the 2023 PGA Championship press conference, Thomas continued talking about his third round at Quail Hollow Golf Course by saying, “I felt like that 70 that I shot that day or the rounds that I’ve been shooting 73 and 74”.

He further added how it gave him an opportunity to play himself into contention with nine holes left, whereas he wouldn’t have been that way beforehand. Despite missing out on plenty of birdies and putt opportunities, the golfer believes to have regained momentum and confidence to score better after his 8 under-par total score performance at Quail Hollow Golf Course in Charlotte.
