Patrick Cantlay's confidence is unshakable—Is he the hero golf needs or the villain fans love to hate?

Patrick Cantlay’s history with the Ryder Cup has not been great. No, it was not because of his performance, but because of his uniform. The event, being a team play, has a few rules that are meant to be followed for easy recognition of the teams. One such rule is to wear the team hat. Well, last year, Patrick Cantlay was spotted not wearing one. According to reports, this was done to protest not being paid at the Ryder Cup despite representing their country.

The European fans made fun of him on the field to distract him. He was also the cause of a prolonged rift inside the American team room. With the Presidents Cup set to begin in Montreal, he has worn a cap. However, the incident is still not forgotten, and he continues to be criticized. But this did not break the 32-year-old, and he is all set to make his third appearance against the International team.

At the Tuesday post-round presser in Montreal, Patrick Cantlay was asked if he had heard anything ‘nasty’ this week. To this, he replied, “Just fueled up.” He went on to add that it is pretty much expected that the fans might say something bad against the players in the opposing team’s home country. But according to him, the nature of the home fans rooting for their home team and defending it is what makes the event so special.

Generally, whether at the Presidents Cup or the Ryder Cup, every player walking past the bleachers of the opposing supporters is distracted by their comments ahead of gameplay. Cantlay knew he was not the only one who would fall victim to the audience’s comments. Taking to this, he also added, “I’m sure everyone has heard their fair share in these team events, yeah.”

Patrick Cantlay was held responsible for Team America’s defeat at the Ryder Cup last year. But as the reports emerged, the pantomime villain was asked to address the rumors about the protest, which he denied. Instead, he stated that the hat did not fit. “It didn’t fit at [the 2021 Ryder Cup] and didn’t fit this week. Everyone knows that,” he said. A year after this incident, Team USA’s designers got their sizing right, and Cantlay was spotted wearing a hat in Montreal on Monday.

Well, after all the protests at the Ryder Cup, will the US team be paid if they win the trophy at the Presidents Cup? The answer is still no. Their website itself states, “The Presidents Cup is a unique golf event in that there is no purse or prize money.” However, whichever team wins the tournament, each of its competitors will be able to decide the charity where the allocated portion of the funds generated will go for the year.
