Among many unfortunate players for whom Hoylake turned out to be a big disappointment is Utah’s Tony Finau. The golfing skills of Finau failed in Liverpool as he suffered an early exit after missing the cut by one stroke in the second round on Friday.
However, Tony has found another motivation going for him as he preps for another PGA Tour tournament where he emerged victorious last year. Another big name that finds himself in the same boat as Finau is Justin Thomas who also missed the cut. Let’s find out more.

After wrapping up the last men’s major championship this weekend, the PGA Tour will gear up to host its next event on its schedule the 3M Open. Entering the field of 3M Open as the defending champion will be Tony Finau who won the event in 2022 and took home the first prize of $1.35 million. Last year, he made a three-shot win over Sungjae Im and Emiliano Grillo. During this season has won two tournaments already, the Houston Open and the Mexico Open. Although he missed the cut at this week’s Open Championship which is a huge disappointment for him.
On Friday he shot a 4-over 75 and went 6-over through 36 holes. Though he is a good golfer, he couldn’t beat the challenges that the Hoylake course threw at him. He made three bogeys in a row which sealed his fate. His best finish at the tournament came back in 2019 when he finished third. With a disappointing finish this week, he would definitely look forward to maintaining his winning streak at the 3M next week.

Besides Tony, big names that will be competing at Minnesota next week are Hideki Matsuyama, Cameron Young, Im, Gary Woodland, Billy Horschel, and Justin Thomas who also couldn’t make the cut at the Open. Thomas was on a downward spiral from day one and gave the worst major championship performance of his career. On Friday he carded an even-par 71 which was better than his first-round’s performance. Yet he missed the cut with a 36-hole total of 14 over. This is Thomas’ third missed cut in the major tournaments of this year. Thankfully on Friday, he was declared a participant for the 3M Open which would have been some relief for him.
