On the second day of the PGA Championship, Scottie Scheffler walked onto the Valhalla greens with four charges to his name. The charges were the assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals. After weeks of legal proceedings, all the charges against the World No. 1 were dismissed on May 29th by the Jefferson County judge due to the lack of evidence supporting the said charges.

Notably, no bodycam footage was retrieved by Officer Bryan Gillis, who arrested Scheffler. The videos of the incident were later released by Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg. According to the initial report, Detective Gillis was dragged by the PGA Tour pro’s car and sustained injuries to his left knee and wrist. Scottie Scheffler would definitely want to put the whole incident behind him. However, it might not be as easy for him as new videos from that fateful day have been making the rounds on the internet that might haunt Scheffler while he plays at Muirfield Village.

Right after Bryan Gillis handcuffed the 27-year-old, he was escorted to a different police officer’s car. The X handle (formerly Twitter) shared a tweet that consisted of a snippet from the police car in which Scheffler could be heard having a conversation with the officer. The police officers were totally unaware that Scottie Scheffler was a renowned face in the golf world.

The officer asked Scheffler if he had a drink, to which the 10-time PGA Tour clarified that he used only mouthwash. Although Scheffler was under arrest, he tried to defuse the situation by jokingly asking if he would be charged with drinking to play golf at 8 am.

The officer was not sure and turned to the conversation to assume that Scheffler was probably pretty good to play in the PGA Championship. Scheffler humbly replied, “I’m alright.” The officer then questioned Scheffler about Tiger Woods and asked, “Is Tiger as good as they say he is?“, He replied, “he is that good.” Unfortunately, this time at the PGA Championship, the 15-time major champion missed the cut.

Scheffler was taken into police custody and later released at 8:40 am. The tee time for the second round was rescheduled. Scheffler reached to the Valhalla Country Club at 9:12, just over an hour before his tee time. Within moments of his arrest, many came forward for his immediate release, which also included many of the PGA Tour pros. But back at the police department, the news of Scottie Scheffler being a prominent figure in golf was not known to many. The revelation did catch one of the officers by surprise, especially given Scheffler’s modest and humble demeanor.

The officer advised Scottie Scheffler to have a driver

At the police department, Scheffler was uncuffed as he sat down at the bench. The hazy body cam video indicates that the 27-year-old showed him that he was ranked #1 in golf on his mobile. The officer, taken aback by the revelation of Scheffler’s stardom, said, “I didn’t know you were the no. 1 in the world right now. That’s why the news is there.”

While the two joked with each other, the police officer blinded by Scheffler’s friendly behavior said, “You’re too casual to be the #1 player in the world. You should have had a driver.” Interestingly, Scheffler responded that now he had become the No. 1 golfer with a felony too. But the officer reassured him that it was just temporary and he’d be alright.

Scheffler, in return, appreciated the officer having a conversation with him throughout the car ride and in jail as he shook with fear during the whole fiasco. It seemed that Scheffler was trying to keep calm and did not let emotion lead him through the traumatic experience. It has been days after and the 27-year-old has probably moved on from the arrest incident.
