Annika Sorenstam is possibly the most-talked-about golfer in women’s golf. Her career in just one word would most certainly be described as “successful.” And that’s not just her golf career! Her massive business empire and her foundation that works towards the betterment of society are all successful ventures. And because of it all, she’s seen in herself the title of “the greatest of all time,” a.k.a. “the GOAT.” But the LPGA Tour star once revealed how she truly felt about that nickname. And well, it was a little unexpected!

Sorenstam’s take on her famous nickname

In March 2022, Annika was featured as a guest on Callaway Golf’s Range Talk series. The episode saw the LPAG Tour star and the host, Roger Steele, playing golf on the course and chatting each other up. And soon after it began, one of the first few questions that Steele had for the golf legend was whether she liked being called the “GOAT.” “I do now,” stated Sorenstam with a smile.

But it was that “now” that was quite intriguing. Why didn’t she like it before? Did the legend think she didn’t deserve it at first? Well, the actual answer wasn’t that complex at all. And, to put it simply, Sorenstam was confused. “The first time someone called me the GOAT I didn’t really know what to expect because I was thinking about the animal,” she stated hilariously.

The LPGA Tour champion added that once she learned the meaning of it, she realized what a great honor it was. “That is such a big compliment,” she stated, acknowledging that Steele too had just called her the GOAT. “I feel very honored; thank you for saying that.” The humble Swedish golfer was proud of being known as the greatest.

What did Annika Sorenstam accomplish to earn herself the GOAT title?

The Swede turned pro over three decades ago, in 1992. Two years later, she joined the LPGA Tour and found her first win three years later. a major championship win nonetheless! Sorenstam was unstoppable thereafter. She went on to win 72 times on the Tour, including 10 major championships. In 2003, she was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame for her achievements.

But the 10-time major winner has done a lot more for the sport than just winning trophies. In 2007 she started the ANNIKA foundation to support young women and provide them with opportunities to play golf. There too she’s found success, and her foundation generates huge sums of money to work towards her mission. The golf pro sincerely seems to be growing the game in her own way.
