The 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome was a massive success, generating a record-breaking €262 million for Italy’s economy! This is an 11% increase from the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris. The event drew in over 271,000 spectators from 100 countries, with many extending their stay in Rome and expressing interest in returning to Italy. The economic boost came from various sources, including accommodation, food, and other expenditures. Italian officials, including the Minister of Tourism and the Sports Minister, praised the event’s success, highlighting its potential to promote Italy as a golf destination and drive tourism.
Which is why, the Ryder Cup is going to have a lasting impact, especially with plans to build golf resorts in southern Italy and attract more international tourists. The excitement was totally palpable in a recent episode of the DP World Tour on YouTube. The host was still buzzing about the golf match, where Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg absolutely destroyed Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka, a five-time major champion, in a record-breaking victory. Their friend joked, ” I was too busy focusing on the parties and celebrations, and um, your love life, rather than the fact that you absolutely annihilated Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka, and, uh, which, on a golf podcast, we should probably mention”.
The host was still grinning from ear to ear, thinking back to the match. Hovland remembered talking to his playing partner, Aberg, on the 11th fairway, saying, “This doesn’t happen very often, and it’s against a five-time major champion, and Scotty, who’s won every tournament that he’s basically played.’ Yeah, this… the only thing that sucks, is that it’s morning, and it’s… or, midnight in the US, so they didn’t get to see that a**-whooping.” Well because of the time zone difference, H0vland felt that eh missed the opportunity to depict that whole final round in front of the American audience. But, you can tell both of them are still on cloud nine about the whole thing. So, when did they know they had it in the bag? Apparently, it was when they got three or four strokes ahead.

Now that we have discussed the biggest regret from the 2023 Ryder Cup, let’s dive into one of the most memorable or might I say questionable moments from the tournament.
Brooks Koepka and Patrick Cantlay at the center of controversy
The Ryder Cup is known for its camaraderie and sportsmanship, but the 2023 event in Rome saw some questionable behavior from players on both teams. It all started with Brooks Koepka’s post-match comments after he and Scottie Scheffler halved their four-ball match against Jon Rahm and Nicolai Hojgaard. Koepka was irked by Rahm’s passionate celebrations, saying “Act like a child. But we’re adults. We move on.”
The tension continued to build on Day 2, with reports of a “fractured” US team due to Patrick Cantlay‘s silent protest over not being paid. Cantlay’s refusal to wear a team hat led to fans trolling him, and things came to a head when he made a crucial birdie putt on the 18th hole. The celebrations that followed led to some heated exchanges between Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava, and Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry. The drama continued even after the match, with McIlroy being caught on camera shouting in the parking lot. Despite the controversy, Team Europe went on to win the tournament 16.5-11.5, but the 2023 Ryder Cup will be remembered for its fiery moments as much as its golf.
