Will the DP World Tour ever have more OWGR points than the PGA Tour events? The reality might shock many, but for the time being, the answer is no. The European Tour and the PGA Tour have been compared throughout their course of existence; from talent to OWGR points, everything has been under the radar.

Now, as the schedules of the two have collided, the PGAT has dominated the DPWT. The American circuit’s supremacy is quite evident given the difference in treatment of the Sony Open and Dubai Invitational based on OWGR points. Despite having a star-studded field with golfers like Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy, the Dubai event got the shorter end of the OWGR stick.

The DP World Tour event saw impressive performances by Tommy Fleetwood, who scored a bogey-free eight-under 63 for the third round, and Rory McIlroy, who has been consistent in taking the lead at the Dubai Invitational. On the other hand, the Sony Open has not backed away from presenting its talent.

The extraordinary 144 fields displayed an intense battle for the lead, as the golfers were changing after every round. However, the PGA Tour is way ahead of the DP World Tour when their OWGR points are considered. The Sony Open is evidently dominating the Dubai Invitational with high OWGR points.

The Sony Open offers 48.96204 points to its winners, while with more than 20 points difference, the Dubai Invitational offers only 20.12747. The secret to more points lies in the field rankings. While the Sony Open has a ranking of 284.67509, the Dubai Invitational only has a ranking of 95.00971.

The significant difference in rankings can be compared, as the Dubai Invitational only has 10 players from the top 100 on the OWGR, while the Sony Open has 55 golfers from the OWGR in the field. Even though the Sony Open came out on top of the Dubai Invitational in the OWGR race, the Hawaiian event did lose to another PGA Tour event.

Comparing two PGA Tour events head-to-head

The PGA Tour started its 2024 season with an opening swing in Hawaii. The first no-cut, limited-field event, The Sentry, was the first stop for the Tour. Despite a smaller number of golfers, this event earned more OWGR points and secured a higher field ranking compared to the Sony Open.

The reported difference between the rankings was to be only 0.65533, but the points given had a difference of 11.04276. The Sentry gave 60.0048 points to the winner, while the Sony Open offered only 48.90204. Given the comparison, the Sentry still prevails at the top, as the event has successfully drawn the attention of top golfers from all around the world.
