Before LIV Golf, the PGA Tour was it! It always received ample attention and ratings from the fans, with no competition in sight. But things changed in 2022. LIV Golf was incepted, and the tour had a competition to stay ahead of. Many of its players defected, and the repercussions of it have been faced to date. This year, the viewership of the tour events has been down by almost 20%, as per Rory McIlroy. Many regular events have witnessed massive drops in broadcast numbers, especially on the first and final days. To deal with the problem, Tour and the 54-year-old Commissioner, Jay Monahan, needed solutions. It turns out the quest to re-glorify the American Tour has begun.

Linda Yaccarino, the Chief Executive Officer of X Corp., announced that the PGA and Elon Musk’s X Corporation have teamed up. It is to serve golf fans with a better, quicker, and more desirable way of enjoying their favorite golf highlights. She wrote in her post, “Golf fans, you’re getting MORE of the tour—oon the best place for sports!! @X is teaming up with @PGATOUR to bring real-time highlights and more videos from every TOUR event. Let’s do this!!”

Paul Azinger had earlier revealed how “budget cut after budget cut.” was degrading the broadcast coverage, where they had to get rid of drones and put all the towers in the same booth. With this new tie-up, there might be better results from the upcoming events. Although Yaccarino has not specified any particulars about when these will be available, the announcement can surely raise fans’s expectations. Golf fans can be hopeful for the upcoming tournament, Charles Schwab Challenge, which will commence from May 23 to May 26, 2024.

ABC News reported that the TV ratings for the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Florida, were also down 30% compared to last year, even when Scottie Scheffler had a 5-stroke victory this time. They also noted, “TV ratings for final-round coverage of the Genesis Invitational on Feb. 18—when 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama returned to the winner’s circle—were down about 5%.” It was expected that at least in the showdown where both LIV and PGA Tour players will play, ratings will be higher, but no!

Given this situation, teaming up with a social media platform like X would help the PGA Tour immensely. The growing preference for shorter and more accessible content through social media is at its peak. To present the live highlights of the PGA Tour in this form would certainly show an improved reach compared to traditional TV channels. The $3 billion merger is still hanging in the air. However, if reports are to be believed, PIF will inject $1.5 billion into the PGA Tour. There are chances that even the finalized merger could fail to bring back the unity between the Saudi-funded league and the American Tour, as the former is also hell-bent on being one of the best leagues out there! The recent steps taken indeed say so!

LIV Golf’s update for an improved executive circle while competing with the PGA Tour

In merely two years of existence, the Saudi-backed league has always aimed to give much competition to its arch-rival, the PGA Tour. When the latter was stumbling with its reach, LIV Golf made a substantial change in its approach as it hired top-level new executives with impressive backgrounds in the niche. The list of executives includes David Phillipps, Chief Financial Officer; Ross Hallett, EVP, Head of Events; Katie O’Reilly, EVP, Head of Team Business Operations; and Pam Sacree, Head of Human Resources. Tim Taylor is appointed for a completely new EVP role, along with which he will also lead LIV Golf’s London office. The former PepsiCo executive, Adam Harter, has also been appointed as the Chief Marketing Officer.

With such a powerful and fresh force on their side, LIV Golf shows a considerable possibility of how they might want to surpass the Tour’s popularity. The newly appointed Ross Hallett expressed, LIV Golf presents a unique opportunity to bring the sport to new fans and new markets in bold ways, and I believe in what the league is building.” David Phillips, on the other hand, claimed, On top of the world-class play on the course, LIV provides an improved and differentiated value proposition for sponsors, media partners, and fans.”

What are Elon Musk’s thoughts on the new deal? It remains to be seen. Do you think the new partnership will help Tensed Monahan provide a better experience for fans watching from home?
