Is Greg Norman's demotion a strategic move or a sign of internal turmoil at LIV Golf?

Just a week ago, it was revealed that the breakaway circuit would soon be replacing Greg Norman from his CEO post. The Sports Journal Business reported that the Public Investment Fund behind LIV Golf had hired a London-based firm to look for a new executive to hire for LIV Golf. Although Norman would be replaced, he would still stay in a senior leadership position, the report clarified.

So has his transfer from CEO to a different post changed Norman’s passion for growing LIV Golf to a better level? You’d be wrong to say yes. In late September, the exiting CEO was present at the Open de Espana as he was looking for a different Spain venue for LIV Golf’s 2025 Spain event. He was probably looking at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. And now a new report by Sky Sports suggests that Norman has another DP World Tour event course in his mind.

Sky Sports reported that the 69-year-old has reached out to finalize the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon, which hosts the Hero Indian Open every year. It is apparently a deal for LIV Golf’s funded International Series on the Asian Tour for next February, which would ensure that the Tour will hold an event in India, where 148 International golfers including 16 of LIV Golf will tee up.

In 2024, LIV Golf invested $300 million (a 10-year deal) in the Asian Tour to create elevated events in that league. This would be another step in the direction of growing the Asian Tour, which acts as a feeder league for LIV. Per LIV Golf’s partnership with the Asian Tour’s International Series, the first leader of their ranking, Andy Ogletree was inducted into the breakaway circuit in 2024. Similarly, LIV Golf is trying to grow the Asian Tour in India and other countries. The news will probably be announced in the coming weeks.

Nonetheless, it is not the first time Greg Norman has onboarded the venues of the DP World Tour or even, the PGA Tour. The Shark has successfully added many of the DP World Tour courses to LIV Golf’s schedule.

DP World Tour courses that Greg Norman started LIV Golf on

Over the last three years, Greg Norman has tried to build LIV Golf on those courses that remain like a picnic and also historical for the DP World Tour. This shows that the DLF Golf and Country Club is not the only one on Norman’s checklist. Here are a few of the courses that were once part of the European Tour and also hosted LIV Golf events.

Is Greg Norman's demotion a strategic move or a sign of internal turmoil at LIV Golf?

Have an interesting take?

[Golf course – DP World Tour event] The Centurion Club (England) – The GolfSixes series, Royal Greens Golf and Country Club (Saudi Arabia) – Saudi International, Hong Kong Golf Club (Hong Kong) – Hong Kong Open, Sentosa Golf Club (Singapore) – Singapore Open, and Real Club Valderrama (Spain) – Open de España.

But Norman’s chase for better golf courses does not stop at the DP World Tour. In 2022, the breakaway circuit boarded one of the PGA Tour’s longest-hosting venues, the El Camaleon Golf Club in Mayakoba, Mexico. This club used to host the World Wide Technology Championship for 16 years. However, after LIV Golf Mayakoba and the PGA Tour broke ties, Norman now looks for more courses across the globe. It will be interesting to see which other DP World Tour or PGA Tour course he adds to LIV Golf’s events.
