The PGA Tour’s 2023 season is almost in its final leg and all four majors are in the rearview mirror now. The next big thing that the golfers are looking forward to is the FedEx Cup playoffs. Why? This is the first time that the top 70 players qualify for the PGA Tour’s postseason. The field at the 3M Open this year is weak as is, with golfers trying to reach the top 70 by fighting hard and getting to compete in the FedEx Cup.

The PGA Tour is now back in the United States with the 3M Open being hosted at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota. TPC Twin Cities previously hosted the 3M Championship on the Champions Tour before the 3M Open was added to the PGA Tour schedule in 2018. Let us get to know a bit more about this Minnesota-based golf course that has been home to many Champions Tour and PGA Tour events.

The course was established in 2000 and was designed by legendary golfer Arnold Palmer along with the assistance of Tom Lehman. The golf course is built on the only privately owned property of the PGA Tour and is located just minutes north of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The par-72 and 7,468-yard championship golf course is a very challenging one even for the greatest golfers.

The course has 6 sets of tees including a family tee on each hole so golfers can experience an enjoyable round of golf. TPC Twin Cities is home to native prairie grasses and includes 27 bodies of water. One of the most notable ones is at the par-5 18th, where a large lake guards the right side of the fairway and the front of the green.

Among the 11 par-4s on the course, five of them range between 450-500 yards, three are between 400-425 yards, and two plays are shy of 400 yards. Hole numbers Nos. 2, 3, and 9 were the three most difficult par-4 holes on the course as the average distance of the par-4s is 440 yards, and these three holes range nearly 450 yards.

Three of the four par-3s play over 200 yards. The longest par-3 on the course is only 228 yards. The 177-yard 4th hole is the shortest. On the hole, the 177-yard hole yielded the most number of birdies in 2022. The average distance of the par-3s is somewhere around 203 yards.

All three par-5s push the 600-yard plateau but ranked among the four easiest holes last year. The 596-yard 18th hole has produced a few fireworks finishes in the tournament’s short history, including Matthew Wollf making an eagle to snatch up his first PGA Tour win in his third professional start.

  • Hole 6

This hole is a classic example of a risk/reward situation. It is a 594-yard par-5 hole that is double dogleg and it challenges golfers with more strategic options than perhaps any other hole on the course.

A tee shot played over any portion of the deep fescue grasses framing the right side will shorten the hole significantly. Any successful approach played over the pond should safely find the wide putting green.

  • Hole 7

Known as “Tom’s Thumb” in reference to PGA TOUR player and course consultant Tom Lehman, the green on this 381-yard par-4 may be reached with a long and accurate tee shot. A shot on this hole carries the lake on the left side and avoids the massive bunkers short and right of the green.

A conservative tee shot into the fairway will often render an approach of fewer than 100 yards to the two-tiered green.

  • Hole 9

This 502-yard par-4 hole is one of the most difficult holes for golfers to play, but once done, the feeling of conquering this shot is extremely satisfying.

Golfers who successfully find the fairway with the tee shot must still navigate large mounding to the left of a sloping green, which is shaped around the lake’s edge. This approach and shotcane be challenging even for the finest long iron players.

  • Hole 14

At 437 yards, this sweeping dogleg left around Cavner’s Cove is home to two large Loons. A successful tee shot along the right side of the fairway will leave most golfers with a simpler shot into the unguarded front right portion of the green.
