After the wild ride of rivalry between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. The deal was worth around $3 billion between them. Soon, “a newly formed commercial entity to unify golf” will be established by both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. The Public Investment Fund (PIF), which owns LIV, will be their exclusive investment vehicle. In short, after a year of strong opposition, the PGA Tour has decided to merge with its prime rival.

The news was disclosed by PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan a few days ago, and the loudest cheer came from the LIV golfers. But what really jumps out is how the PGA Tour athletes were completely unaware of the merger while earlier rejecting a million-dollar offer from LIV Golf. As a result, the PGA Tour’s top management, in particular Jay Monahan, came under intense scrutiny. And now another significant piece of information concerning Monahan has just surfaced on the official site.

Jay Monahan is currently taking a break from all the exercises. He is now healing from an undisclosed “medical surgery.” Golf Communications via its official Instagram account released the information. The caption on the post reads, “Jay Monahan is recuperating from a medical situation.”

This is the first time in his six years rule, Monahan is taking a break. Ron Price, the chief operating officer, and Tyler Dennis, the executive vice president and president of the tour, will oversee all daily operations until Monahan recovers.

The PGA Tour commissioner is having a difficult time right now. He caused a stir by striking a deal with LIV Golf and keeping it a secret from the players on the tour. The deal is also facing strict scrutiny by the US Senate. Senator Richard Blumenthal, who is also chairman of the Senate Select Subcommittee on Investigations, asked Greg Norman about the records regarding the merger details. He asked for records of the communication between the two leagues and also for LIV’s corporate structure. The players on the tour are now calling for Monahan to resign. Let’s find out!

PGA Tour players’ demands in the meeting

The merger news did not thrill everyone, especially the PGA Tour players. Although Monahan has pledged to honor the players’ devotion to the tour, many continue to call for his departure.

Monahan had a meeting with the tour participants after the announcement. The PGA Tour golfer Johnson Wagner stated during a Golf Channel broadcast that the conversation was anything but cordial and rapidly became heated. One player asked for a new leadership call, and all of his teammates gave him a standing ovation. This was a clear indication that players felt abandoned by their league.

And now fans are waiting for Tiger Woods‘ stance on the merger since he reportedly denied an almost $1 billion deal from LIV Golf last year. Even though the prestigious US Open is still a few hours away, the new fire created by the formation will engage the golf world.
