But now, the former World No. 1 is all set to make a quick comeback to the top with his unexpected return to Charlotte.
Where is Rory McIlroy headed?

However, among all these players, Rory McIlroy is in the spotlight, making it back to his territory. McIlroy has been in the news for quite some time now. Not to forget, the golf star recently suffered a huge loss of nearly $3 million after his absence from the RBC Heritage tournament. However, this could be his chance to redeem himself among golf fans, and could even make it to the win. After all, watching him at the Well Fargo Championship hasn’t been any less than a treat for the fans as well as the officials. Tournament Director Gary Sobba said, “Rory has been a great ambassador for our tournament, and he always brings another level of excitement to the competition when he plays,”.
Notably, this year, the golfer might face some serious competition from players, including Max Homa, who won the tournament last year and is back to defend his title. Other leading players include Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Will Zalatoris, Tony Finau, Cameron Young, and many more.

Why did the PGA Tour impose a $3 million fine on McIlroy?
Despite proving his loyalty towards the tour several times, McIlroy had to face a huge financial setback for the first time. With the inclusion of elevated events in the PGA Tour’s schedule, golfers are only allowed to skip one event for any given reason.
However, the Irish pro ended up making it a second miss at the RBC Heritage after initially skipping the season-opening Tournament of Champions. And as a result, McIlroy had to face a $3 million penalty. It will be deducted directly from his $12 million PIP bonus from last year.
