It’s merely days after the LPGA Tour got a sound boost from former player, Michelle Wie West’s generous gesture. But that hasn’t eliminated the Tour’s other problems, which include continuous cancellation of its Tour games. After this month’s Blue Bay, LPGA was called off, yet another Asian event, scheduled in October, has been scrapped.

LPGA Tour’s second Asian cancellation

First held in 2011, the Taiwan Swinging Skirts was the earliest LPGA Tour event held in the country. While it has seen its fair share of sponsors in the past, the event hasn’t made an appearance on the Tour since 2019. This year won’t be any different, as the board stated that the event has been canceled due to “operational factors.”

“The LPGA Tour is thankful for Chairman Wang, the GAROC and the Swinging Skirts Foundation team for providing opportunities for LPGA Tour athletes since 2014 and their continued dedication for growing women’s golf in Chinese Taipei, as well as the countless fans and volunteers who have supported the event in its history,” the LPGA Tour said in a news release.

Reading between the lines, the statement didn’t reveal any future plans for the event, which is contrary to last year’s announcement, which mentioned the organizers were looking forward to 2023.

The news comes as a jolt to the Tour, which already has its fair share of cancellations, including the Blue Bay LPGA event, which was scheduled to be held this month. It comes on the back of former US Women’s Open winner, Michelle Wie West’s latest announcement, where she informed about free stays for golfers during the Mizuho Americas Open. The event will be played at the Liberty National Golf Course at the end of May and will be hosted by Wie herself.

Who won the last Taiwan Swinging Skirts?

The last edition of the tournament was held in 2019, where a then-20-year-old, Nelly Korda emerged victorious. The win followed the prodigious golfer’s first-ever win on the Tour in the same tournament in 2018, which she won by two strokes.

But since 2019, the event has been missing from the LPGA Tour calendar. While the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc in 2020, the competition was canceled due to travel and border restrictions in the country.
