The build-up to the 2023 Ryder Cup has been nothing short of dramatic, with both Team Europe and Team USA making headlines for their roster selections. Luke Donald’s European picks, particularly those of a DP World Tour pro, have raised eyebrows, especially considering the omission of the in-form Adrian Meronk.

With this PGA Tour pro’s recent performances sliding downward, the pick seemed a contentious choice, especially when placed against Meronk’s impressive stats. Can he silence his naysayers with his performance, starting with the Irish Open?

Before heading to the 2023 Ryder Cup journey, Shane Lowry is teeing off at the Irish Open, now in progress at the K Club’s Ryder Course, where he began well with a score of 4-under 68. During an interview, he highlighted the forthcoming month’s significance, which will witness him participate in his home open, the Irish Open, and in the Ryder Cup later this month.

Outside of major golf, it doesn’t get much bigger or better,” he said, talking about his homeland’s events and how much they meant to him. “Here this week, half an hour, 40 minutes from where I grew up, playing in my home tournament, and then I get to go to defend at Wentworth next week.'”

He further added that he was also looking for these events to build up his performance ahead of the Ryder Cup. Lowry claimed that he was more than excited for the prestigious event. “When you’re a kid growing up, this is what dreams are made of, and I’m trying to embrace it as much as I can,” said the Irishman about the Ryder Cup. Lowry clearly exudes eagerness to embrace the upcoming challenges; however, this enthusiasm is clouded by controversy!

Choosing Lowry above talents such as Adrian Meronk has caused debate and controversy, particularly from figures such as LIV Golf’s Richard Bland. Bland questioned the decision, citing Meronk’s outstanding performance at the Italian Open, which was held on the Ryder Cup’s scheduled course. Many in the golf community seem to agree with his opinion in favor of Meronk’s inclusion.

Facing this backdrop of criticism, Lowry acknowledged his recent form hasn’t been his best. Yet, with unwavering confidence, he stated, ” I feel like I’ve not been far away. Never felt like I was too far away this year. I’m happy I’m on the team and I feel like I can add a lot to the team and I feel like when it comes to Rome, I’ll be ready.”

However, Europe isn’t alone in facing criticism. Team USA’s decision to exclude the red-hot Bryson DeChambeau, who’s been striking the ball further than anyone else and recently secured a victory with a stunning 58 at a LIV Golf event, came as a shocker to many. In his stead, the selection of Justin Thomas, despite an inconsistent season, has been justified by some due to his prior Ryder Cup experience.
