In a recent interview with Golf Monthly, the three-time Open Championship winner opened up about the upcoming major. He expects there to be a lot of drama surrounding the new 17 hole at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. The hole has already drawn many opinions from the golfers in the tournament. The short par-3 hole is anything but loaded with danger as it has a sandy wasteland in front of the green, while the bunkers on both its sides would induce penalties.

The penultimate hole of the Championship would turn out to be a nerve-racker and will probably decide the winner of the tournament. “So that’s going to be a good nervy hole – I think we’re going to see some drama on that one.” said the ex-golfer. He said that anything can happen on the hole in ‘blustery weather’. “It’s more the fear factor,” he continued, “You look at all the trouble around it and where it could go wrong. The short par-3s get you mentally more than technically.”.
The retired English golfer went on to state that the abundance of bunkers with the tough weather conditions on the course would bring forward a tough game for the golfers. All these factors together with tricky short holes would test the golfer’s mentality more than his technique. Staying calm throughout the game can be key to this course.

Faldo’s pick of the crop
The 66-year-old opened up about who he thinks would win it this time around. While there are a number of favorites to win the competition, Faldo feels Shane Lowry is the man to be looked out for. “I honestly don’t know (who will win) but I always like Shane Lowry, if I know it’s going to be rough weather, I think Shane is a danger man.” he added.
Shane Lowry won the 2019 Open Championship held at the Dunluce Course. He went on to score a total of 15 under overall 269 to take home the Claret Jug while finishing at T12 settling for a 274 (-6) in 2021 and T21 in 2022 at a score of 2 under overall 279. Although his recent performance has been rather underwhelming, Faldo feels like he has the potential to surprise everyone.
