Incidents of hacking sports personality’s social media handles have become very common these days. Numerous personalities have experienced cyber-attacks, including several sportspersons, and LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam, is the recent victim.
Apparently, Sorenstam’s Instagram account was hacked recently, and the account was also utilized to defraud her followers.

Sorenstam is a big name in the female golf world. She is often in the news for her passion for her sport and the contribution that she makes to empower young female golfers. In fact, she was also in the news for her recent U.S. Women Open performance wherein she missed the cut after playing two rounds for the event. But this time she is making headlines due to a cyber attack that bungled with her followers. She also went on to clarify her followers regarding the same later.
In reality, the hacker had used Sorenstam’s account and posted a story that read, “Hi, I have 10 new, unopened and guaranteed macbook pros sent to us by the sponsors. Its price is only $650. Those who want to buy can send a message. All proceeds will go to the charity UNICEF. Please only serious buyers message. It will be sent as a signed box.”
After learning the situation, the 10-time major championship winner reposted the story and confirmed that her account had been hacked. She also requested her followers not to engage with such posts, and report the same. Furthermore, the LPGA pro golfer shared this message in an Instagram post as well.

Well, this is not the first time that the sports world has witnessed a cyber attack. There have been many other instances where sports personalities have unfortunately encountered the same.

Incidents when hackers shook the sports world
A few months back, in May, late soccer player Diego Maradona’s account underwent a hacking incident. His social media handle suddenly started showing strange posts that made fans and followers puzzled. The player’s management team addressed the situation and asked fans not to believe in it at all.
Furthermore, back in 2018, the PGA of America become the victim of a ransomware attack. The hacker group named Shadowy Bandits, hijacked the computer servers of the PGA of America. This resulted in the staff not getting to access crucial files that had marketing content for the match and the Ryder Cup in France!
