Bad days are inevitable in sports. Like it or not, even the best athletes undergo rough patches from time to time. One golfer who is currently going through a much-dreaded slump is the World No. 3, Rory McIlroy.

After a rough couple of months on the course, the PGA Tour pro will definitely want to prove his detractors wrong in the 2023 PGA Championship. As McIlroy sets eyes on a 3rd Wanamaker trophy, the Irishman has now found support in none other than Tiger Woods!

The past April was especially tough on 4-time major winner Rory McIlroy. A big favorite going into the 2023 Masters, the golfer shockingly missed the cut at the Augusta National. He then also sat out the RBC Heritage event at Hilton Head, leading to much controversy. To add to his woes, the former World No. 1 could only muster up a T47 finish at the Quail Hollow Club recently.

So, how is McIlroy planning to overcome his terrible stretch? Well, the 34-year-old has been actively working with swing coach Michael Bannon to refine his skills further. Additionally, his fellow golfing compatriot Tiger Woods has also reportedly stepped in to help.

On Tuesday, Eamon Lynch reported on Golf Channel that the 15-time major champion reached out to McIlroy after the Wells Fargo Championship. Apparently, Woods had noticed something amiss in the golfer’s swing during the PGA Tour event.

As two of the best in the game, both athletes share a fantastic relationship on and off the greens. Per Lynch, McIlroy also spent a couple of hours at his friend’s Jupiter Island-based $54 million mega-mansion last Friday before heading to New York for the year’s second major.

The PGA Championship is now just hours away from kicking off, and McIlroy will be making his 15th appearance in the tournament. He has previously won the major twice, in 2012 and 2014. Meanwhile, Woods will be sitting out the 105th edition of the event as he recovers from ankle surgery.

Why is Woods not a part of the PGA Championship field?

Woods has been missing from action since his withdrawal from Masters last month and will not be appearing in the PGA Championship either. The injury-laden golfer visibly struggled at Augusta in April, which eventually led to his abrupt exit.

The 47-year-old also underwent surgery on his right ankle to “address post-traumatic arthritis” resulting from an injury sustained during his tragic 2021 car accident. He is recuperating following the successful procedure, and it will be some time before he returns to the greens.

Woods’ absence from the 156-players field this year has come as an immense shock for many. After all, the World Golf Hall of Famer has a sensational track record at the major, previously winning the Wanamaker trophy four times. Moreover, the golfer also holds the unique record for most consecutive wins in stroke play at the PGA Championship.
