Did Greg Norman's ego doom LIV Golf from the start? What went wrong with his grand plan?

We all know about the declining viewership problem that the golf industry has been facing lately. But no one, and we mean no one, would’ve imagined that the low TV ratings would result in this drastic of a change. Despite trying very hard, Norman and LIV Golf were defeated by the PGA Tour yet again in the latest viewership numbers. LIV Golf’s recent event at the Greenbrier drawing attracted only 136,000 viewers on Saturday and 165,000 on Sunday, which is a far cry from the PGA Tour’s FedEx St. Jude Championship.

The first tournament of the FedEx Cup Playoffs attracted a whopping 2.2 million fans for the final round. So it’s safe to say that LIV Golf still hasn’t made loyal fans, and the proof is the latest news. In a recent post on X, Handicap 54 posted that the LIV Mayakoba event will no longer be featured on the calendar. Yes, you read that right. We all know how sometimes even the best-laid plans can fail, and that was exactly what happened with LIV Golf’s recent event in Mayakoba. Despite Norman’s track record of drawing huge crowds in places like Adelaide and Singapore, it seems like this one just didn’t fit with fans, with only 432,000 tuning in. And you can bet Greg Norman is feeling the sting of disappointment and taking a step back.

The 3-year contract had the option to end early, and LIV chose to use it because they couldn’t agree on financial terms. “According to my sources, LIV Mayakoba will no longer be on the calendar. The contract was for 3 years and there was a unilateral exit clause established by both parties (first by the Mayakoba people and then by the LIV  people),” read the post.

But here’s the silver lining: Mexico is still very much on the LIV Golf map! The tour will simply relocate to the stunning Golf Club of Chapultepec in August. So, it seems like Greg Norman is losing the viewership race badly, and with the latest innovations in the PGA Tour’s broadcast, it is only going to get worse.
