Is Tiger Woods' Sunday red more of a curse than a charm these days?

If someone mentions golf, one name definitely comes to mind: Tiger Woods. The 15-time major winner is inseparable from the sport, as he has taken it to new heights. However, even his name and the huge popularity stitched to it haven’t been adequate to make his brand, Sun Day Red, popular. Every time any Sun Day Red update comes to light, fans don’t hold back from criticizing it. And this trend now continues. Ahead of the Open Championship at Royal Troon, Woods is facing backlash for Sun Day Red.

NUCLR GOLF recently shared a post on its official X account announcing Woods’s clothing brand’s latest launch, “rain gear.” The jacket and pants from the newly launched line retail for a staggering $550 and $500, respectively. A $150 umbrella is also part of the line. And when the fans were asked after the $1200 announcement, “Will you be making a purchase?” boy did they have a lot to say.

There was considerable anticipation in the golf community when Tiger Woods introduced his new brand, Sun Day Red, back in February. However, the brand quickly fizzled upon its launch, failing to meet expectations, and that downhill journey has persisted ever since.

And even the all-black rain gear from the 48-year-old’s clothing line has failed to overturn fans’ initial assessment of it. In their eyes, the brand still stands as a failure.

Golf world dubs Tiger Woods’s Sun Day Red ‘too pricey’

Tiger Woods’ 82 PGA Tour events and 15 major wins are no doubt already part of the sport’s history books. And even though he’s no longer in his prime, he’s still one of the most popular names in golf. On Instagram, the golf pro has 3.5 million followers, and on X, that number shoots up to 6.5 million. However, not even this immense popularity and his name attached to the brand are enough to convince fans to buy Sun Day Red products.

“Not even Tiger could make me buy an umbrella for 150$,” wrote one. Another, too, agreed with the sentiment that the clothes were expensive; however, they did think that there would be buyers. “Too pricey for me….but wouldn’t shock me if it’s sold out quick.”

The quality and look of Sun Day Red, too, do not match its price for fans. To them, the brand’s clothes look extremely normal. On X, fans even took to comparing the latest line’s look to Ross, Marshall, and Costco. These stores are deemed to have clothes of lower quality and are often sold at discounted rates. Fans believe that Woods’s brand should be available at these stores rather than being marketed as a luxury item due to its cheaper look and feel. “They’ll be at Ross and Marshall’s very quickly,” said one, while another added. “Costco looking clothes.”

Tiger Woods launched Sun Day Red just a few weeks after his split with long-time apparel sponsor Nike. Now that move is in question since fans don’t see Woods’s brand as a hit, whereas Nike and the golf champ were very beneficial to each other. “I prefer Nike,” said one user.
