It has been weeks since Scottie Scheffler’s arrest at the 106th PGA Championship, which made the golf world go berserk. The charges have recently been dropped. But in the golf world, world #1’s interception with Officer Bryan Gillis has not been the only dramatic story between the golfer and an officer. A year down memory lane, one more instance had taken the golf world by storm.

At the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Adam Hadwin walked up to the green to celebrate Nick Taylor’s historic victory at the Oakdale G&CC. But he was quickly taken down by the security guard. A year later, it is not the instance with the guard that left a mark on Hadwin’s mind, but the altercation with the officer that he still vividly remembers.

At the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, the crowd went frantic when Nick Taylor became the first Canadian in 69 years to win the National Open. People broke the rope line; the interviews were rushing down to capture the historical moment, and so did Taylor’s friend Adam Hadwin with champagne to splash the then-winner.

However, Mr. X (the security guard’s wish to stay anonymous) saw a trespasser attempting to disrupt Taylor’s victory. Hadwin was quickly taken down as Mr. X told Bob Weeks of TSN, “I saw it as if it was in slow motion, this guy coming towards Nick with a bottle and no credentials.” Though the interception was with the guard, Hadwin could not forget the police officer who followed after.

Reminiscing over the hilarious tackle down, Hadwin said, “I do remember specifically the officer that came behind the security guard, telling me to drop the bottle. I remember those words and I have an appreciation for authority.” Notably, it can also be seen in the video that Hadwin dropped the bottle quickly on demand.

Later, Taylor’s caddie, Dave Markle, and the tournament director, Bryan Crawford, clarified the confusion, and Hadwin was let go. The police officer, in a respectful gesture, gave back the champagne bottle so that the Canadian pro could continue the celebration, this time without any hindrance. The whole mess-up still follows Hadwin around, as he is frequently asked about the incident and his reaction.

Hadwin has taken the best security measure by burying the beef with the security guard once and for all!

Adam Hadwin reunites with the security guard

It has been nearly a year since Hadwin and Mr. X met each other. It was a funny incident for both of them. Hadwin had been answering the same question and retelling the story most of the time. The security guard received positive support from his friends and colleagues, though there was some ribbing.

The two never saw each other after that, though the takedown followed them both. However, on Tuesday of the 2024 RBC Canadian Open, Hadwin met the guard by chance. Hadwin shared the smiling picture on X as he showed his credentials this time and called the incident “water under the bridge.”

The Canadian pro described the behind-the-scenes of the picture. The guard was standing by the front gate, and Hadwin drove by, taking a glance. He rolled down the window to talk a little. Hadwin said, “As soon as he recognized me, we both had huge smiles on our faces.” Later, he got out of the car, and the two shook hands and took the photo.

The two are past the fiasco, and this time at the Hamilton, nothing of that sort might occur again!
