Is Hank Haney's admiration for Tiger Woods genuine, or just a ploy to mend fences?

It seems like Hank Haney is really missing his former star pupil, Tiger Woods. Their partnership helped Woods win six majors. After parting ways in 2010, spotting Woods and Haney have not shared the most amicable relationship. You see after parting ways, Haney wrote a book named The Big Miss: My Years Coaching Tiger Woods in which he mentioned his time with the former No. 1 golfer. This didn’t go well with Woods, who publicly criticized the book, “I think it’s unprofessional and very disappointing, especially because it’s someone I worked with and trusted as a friend.” Woods told ESPN in an interview. He even called the book “very self-serving.”

Fast forwarding to the present, there have been no updates on the rift from either party until now. Recently, the golf instructor reposted a video of Woods helping his fellow PGA Tour pro, Collin Morikawa. So does that mean he is hinting at a reconciliation, or perhaps he just misses Woods?

In the video, Woods was seen showing off his short-game techniques to Morikawa to teach him better. While reposting, Haney adorned the video with an admiring caption, stating, “Tiger is a little more advanced than most of the other greats, actually a lot more.” Considering their bond of six years, Haney’s affection for Woods is understandable.

In 2022, at the Golf Subpar podcast, Haney spoke highly of Woods, “People speculate all the time about him, but they are guessing, I was there, I spent 150 days a year with him for six years,” Haney said. “He was incredible, just unbelievable,” Haney claimed that nobody, and he meant nobody was as good as Woods when it came to the driving range, but the golfer had his shortcomings on certain days on the course.

In his defense of being called unprofessional, Haney clarified his stance and emphasized that the memories were his to share and that he had every right to discuss them, especially since people often asked him about working with Woods. “I’m not sure I understand the unprofessionalism part. He hasn’t read the book. There’s a lot of positives in there,” said Haney.

Hank Haney speaks his mind. He always has, and probably always will. But will he stick to his initial thoughts? Not sure. This isn’t the first time when we have seen a surprising turnaround in Haney’s demeanor. Previously, after criticizing Rory McIlroy‘s caddie Harry Diamond, Haney flipped back from his words.

Does Hank Haney struggle to stick to one stance?

Is Hank Haney's admiration for Tiger Woods genuine, or just a ploy to mend fences?

Have an interesting take?

After the US Open havoc, he blamed McIlroy’s caddie Harry Diamond for the missed putt on the 18th, stating that if Steve Williams was McIlroy’s caddie, he would have played differently. Taking a stand for his best friend, McIlroy called the criticism ‘unfair.’

Pointing out that Haney has never really faced that kind of pressure, the golfer said “Hank Haney has never been in that position.” He even bashed Haney, quoting that he doesn’t take criticism from those whom he won’t approach for advice. “Someone said to me once, you would never—if you would never take advice from these people, you would never take their criticisms, either. Certainly wouldn’t go to Hank Haney for advice.”

What do you think happened next? Of course, Haney changed his tune, entirely flipping from what he said earlier; “No, I think his caddie is great for him. I never said he wasn’t great for Rory, I said they made a mistake on #15 at the US Open. I actually am actually a big fan of friend caddie’s, anyone can make a mistake.”

It would be interesting to see if Woods responds to Haney’s recent gesture. What do you think? Is Haney trying to reunite with Woods again? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
