There is a huge cultural difference between America and the UK, and it is a known fact. But oftentimes, sports are considered a medium to put that cultural difference aside and just unite for the love of the game and to support their favorite athlete. But recently, during a mixup at the 151st Open Championship, this was not the case!

The mix-up between the American and British fans happened when Rickie Fowler played a shot, and it did not end up going quite the way it was expected! What unfolded soon after was the sheer state of confusion among the fans from the two different countries!

During the opening round of the $16.5 million 151st Open Championship at the historic Royal Liverpool, Rickie Fowler’s one particular shot resulted in bewilderment among the fans from the UK and America. During the round, a man standing out on the fairway gave a signal by moving his hands near his waist, signaling that Fowler’s shot was safe. But as it turns out, the ball was out of bounds!

A video of the incident was posted on Twitter by a Golf Digest writer who wrote, “If I’m Rickie I want this guy in prison. If you give the safe signal and it’s not safe it’s jail. For life.” What unfolded after this post in the comments section was absolute havoc. The writer was called out by the British fans, who pointed out that where the tournament was happening, the signal actually meant that the shot was unsafe.

The confusion mainly arose because of the baseball reference, since in the Great American Game, the signal depicted that the ball played had been fine and in bounds. Just like the havoc around the signal, Fowler’s first-round performance at the major too had left many fans quite perplexed. After all, many had big expectations of him, and his rocky start didn’t seem to fulfill them at all!

The golfer had an unfortunate start in Liverpool and bogeyed his first hole. However, soon after, he was able to gather momentum and maintain a steady pace for the remaining rounds. He scored three birdies on the 5th hole, the 15th hole, and the 17th hole. On all the other remaining holes, the golfer was able to score par. Well, except on the final hole, where things went terribly wrong!

On the 18th hole, the 34-year-old golfer was quite upset and scored a triple bogey! As a result of the complicated last hole, the golfer ended at T47 with a final opening score of +1. Had he managed par at the hole, he would have been two-under par, just three strokes off the leader. But now the Orange Crush will have to try and claw his way back to the top.
