Is Morikawa's meticulous preparation the secret weapon Team USA needs for the Presidents Cup?

Collin Morikawa has had a more than decent 2024. With 7 top-5 finishes, including a T2 at the Tour Championship, he definitely will be one to watch out for in a star-studded Team USA squad at the 2024 Presidents Cup. The American golfer had initially gained fame when he won the 2020 PGA Championship when he was just 23.

Now 27, he has the perfect opportunity to make a mark on the 2024 Presidents Cup. The Los Angeles-based pro will look to have the best tools to extract every ounce of talent he has for the prestigious tournament, and that certainly looks like the case when we look at what’s in his bag.

Morikawa is a TaylorMade guy through and through. He uses the $629.99 Qi10 LS 9.0° driver fitted with a Diamana D+ Limited 80 TX shaft at a 9° loft. The driver is made for players with fast swing speeds. It has a deep face and a more compact overall head shape, which helps to deliver a low launch and a lower spin rate. It is a popular driver and Scottie Scheffler also has it in his bag. Morikawa made the switch recently, having previously used the Qi10 and Qi10 Max drivers.

For his Fairway Woods, Morikawa opts for a SIM 14.0° 3-wood and a $349.99 Qi10 18.0° 5-wood, with a 17.5° loft, both fitted with the Diamana D+ Limited 80 TX shaft. It is said that he made the switch during the practice sessions of The Masters.  The Qi10 provides unmatched forgiveness and lets players have a variety of shots that they can execute. The club also comes with a Thru-Slot Speed Pocket™ and laser-etched topline, which helps boost speed on low-face shots and promote consistently accurate alignment.

As for his Irons, he uses the $1,399.99 P·7CB 4-6 and the P·730 7-PW, again priced at $1,399.99. Both sets are fitted with the Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shaft. Morikawa has a history with P Series irons. There is a famous story about him switching to a full bag of P· 7MCs at the 2021 Open Championship, a decision critical to his victory at Royal St. George’s.

Then, during the 2023 season, he went with his own custom set of P·7MB’s dubbed P·7CM’s. This season, Morikawa was one of the first players to play with the P·7CB irons on TOUR. It started with him using a prototype 4-iron, and he then played a full set at the Scottish Open and the Open. After his return from Scotland, he started using the P·7CB 4-6 as well as the P·730 7-PW. This is not all for the golfer’s bag, there’s more!
