Scottie Scheffler's gesture to Matsuyama—Is this the true spirit of golf we need more of?

“I felt today’s victory slipping away at that point because 17 and 18 are difficult holes enough, let alone to birdie them.” Hideki Matsuyama said this after winning the trophy at the St. Jude Championship on Sunday. Despite having the lead for a while, the Sunday round became rather improbable. The PGA Tour pro’s lead looked almost on the verge of collapse.

Nonetheless, it was on the 17th hole, which was also a difficult one, that the Japanese professional golfer gained momentum again. He eventually clinched the victory and there was one individual to congratulate the golfer in all humility. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler said, “Nice work”, shook Matsuyama’s hand, and hugged him. To this, Matsuyama said, “Thank you.”

A humble gesture from a professional who has seen massive success in his career. Scheffler entered the FedEx Cup Playoffs with a lead at the St. Jude Championship. However, he finished with the fourth position on the leaderboard, three strokes behind Matsuyama. This action from the American golfer came as Matsuyama was talking to his caddie on the ground at the practice round of the BMW Championship. The official Instagram page of the PGA Tour shared the video on their wall as well.

While Scottie Scheffler’s gesture did validate the efforts of the golf professional, he seemed to be executing his best shots on the field. He carded a 25-foot birdie putt on the second last hole and clinched back the lead. On the 18th hole, he carded two precise shots, which gave him one last birdie, and well, the PGA postseason opener was his, with all pride!

With this win, Matsuyama defeated Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland in a two-stroke victory in Memphis. Scottie Scheffler’s added effort of making Hideki Matsuyama feel better about his win was what caught the attention of the golf community.

The golf community dubs Scottie Scheffler as ‘incredibly respectful’

As Scottie Scheffler won the Olympic Gold medal earlier this month, he teared up upon seeing the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ playing in the background. This demonstrated how much winning the quadrennial event meant to him. He posted a 9-under 62 in the final round, and well as he walked onto the podium, this victory felt different than the rest of his wins.

This time, he did not win it for himself, but he did it for his country. He overcame with emotion as the national anthem played, winning the hearts of the golf community. And once again, Scheffler’s sweet gesture of coming and personally congratulating Matsuyama made it a wholesome moment.

Taking to this, one of them commented, “Once again, incredibly respectful, Scottie. Well done.” While another took the fact that despite having benefits entering the field with the lead on the standings, he could not grab the trophy. Yet he had it in him to appreciate a good game of golf for his co-player. They wrote, “Classy guy that Scheffler”.

Before shaking Hideki Matsuyama’s hands and congratulating him, Scottie Scheffler stopped for a while first. Brought both his hands close, took a dap, and bowed in front of the winner. This was what was the highlight of the greetings between the two PGA Tour pros. People left comments like, “With the bow 🤝 and “Bow/dap combo from Scottie was pure.”

In 2021 Hideki Matsuyama scored four bogeys in the final seven holes during the ultimate round of the Masters. His score went up to a 1-over 73. However, it was the golf course that was difficult. Because he ended up gaining a one-stroke victory from Will Zalatoris.

Entering the Masters with contention after grabbing 2 back-to-back wins, Scheffler was already on a roll. Having scored an impressive 4-under 68, at the complex course of Augusta National, he grabbed the win from Ludvig Aberg, with a whopping 4 strokes. Well, both of them have been Masters Champs. Taking to this, one of them commented, “From one Masters champ to another. 😍”
