Every golf tournament becomes a place for controversies at some point in the game, but for the Solheim Cup, it has been a reoccurring case. From golfers like Lexi Thompson, and Charley Hull to Madelene Sagstorm, everyone has fallen victim to these controversies and has faced their fair share of heat from the fans, as we all know golf fans love good drama.
Controversy at the 2015 Solheim Cup involving Suzann Pettersen
Who can forget that bombshell of a last round on Sunday morning at the 2015 Solheim Cup? The one that ignited a firestorm of debate between the top golfers? Yes, that one. It all went down when American golfer Alison Lee thought she’d been given a free pass on the 17th hole by her opponents, Suzann Pettersen and Charley Hull. But, as it turned out, that wasn’t the case at all! The Europeans insisted they hadn’t conceded the putt, and to everyone’s surprise, the referee sided with them.

Pettersen was ready to vocalize her concerns and thoughts after Hull and Lee were seen crying at the 28th hole. “Totally, we are all trying to win. It was very clear from Charley and me that we wanted to see the putt [played],” she said, per Sky Sports. Then, in a surprising turn of events, Lee picked up her ball before finishing the putt. Hull and Pettersen were left in utter surprise.
Despite the controversy, Suzann managed to find the humor in the situation, joking, “I have a lot more followers on Twitter than I had when I teed up this morning.”The incident was overshadowed by the thrilling comeback of the American team, which won the Solheim Cup 14½-13½.
Pettersen’s apology after the 2015 Solheim Cup drama
The controversy that took hold at the last round of the 2015 Solheim Cup lasted longer than expected and left a sour taste in the mouths of many golf fans. What happened on the 17th hole between Suzann Pettersen and Alison Lee sparked a heated debate that went beyond the game itself. Petterson was extremely ashamed of her actions that sparked controversy at the Solheim Cup after she enforced a green penalty on rookie Alison Lee.
Pettersen showed no regret on the last day of the tournament, but a day later she apologized in person to USA captain Juli Inkster and on social media and admitted she prioritized winning over sportsmanship. “I am so sorry for not thinking about the bigger picture in the heat of the battle and competition. I was trying my hardest for my team and put the single match and the point that could be earned ahead of sportsmanship and the game of golf itself,” wrote the golfer.

Lexi Thompson’s shanking controversy at the 2023 Solheim Cup
We all remember the uncomfortable moment that happened at a press conference during the 2023 Solheim Cup in Spain. Lexi Thompson was already getting the heat and had caused some controversy by qualifying for the team despite a poor season, and as if that wasn’t enough, she made a mistake on the 18th hole that cost her team a crucial point on Friday.
Thompson had a chance to win the match for the US team; however, she missed it after she shanked her third shot on the par-5 hole. This led to a huge loss for the US team, and they ultimately tied the tournament 14-14, which led to Team Europe winning the Cup. When a reporter asked Thompson to explain what happened on the 18th hole, the golfer became defensive and refused to comment, saying, “I don’t need to comment on that.”

Her team captain, Stacy Lewis, also got upset with the reporter and said that the question was “terrible.” Many people thought Thompson and Lewis overreacted and should have answered the question. Even so, the golfer was one of the highlights of the whole game.
Dottie Pepper’s broadcasting blunder at the 2007 Solheim Cup
Dottie Pepper found herself in hot water during the 2007 Solheim Cup at Halmstad. While being a part of the commentary team, Pepper forgot to follow the number one rule of broadcasting. She didn’t check her microphone and made a disparaging comment that was caught on air. Pepper referred to American players Laura Diaz and Sherri Steinhauer as “choking freaking dogs” after they failed to close out their match.

This incident was not the first time Pepper had been involved in the Solheim Cup controversy. In 1998, she screamed “Yes!” after her opponent Laura Davies missed a putt. That’s not even the worst part; after saying an enthusiastic yes, the golfer showed zero to no remorse when questioned about her sportsmanship and said, “I don’t really care.” Despite this, Pepper was taken as an assistant at the 2013 Solheim Cup.
