This jam-packed week of the PGA Tour, with RBC Heritage and the Corales Puntacana Championship lined up alongside, seems to pick up pace with every passing second. Brian Harman’s almost incredible performance in Round 1 of the RBC Heritage, followed by his sharp monosyllabic comments in the interview that followed, has garnered the golf world’s attention.

Harman finished Round 1 with a total score of 1-under-par. However, his luck was not as bright on the par-3 17th hole and the par-4 18th hole, which led to him making a bogey and a double bogey on these holes, respectively. When asked about his performance overview for the last hole, Harman chose a monosyllabic “no” to answer the interviewer’s query and blew off the presser just after four questions and 43 words in answers.

However, he did not adopt a similar approach in answering about the birdies he had made. When asked to walk the media and fans over his birdies, although they were short and crisp, he did give insight into his shots. He said, “Chipped in on 3. Made an eight-footer on 6, I guess. 10-footer on 9. Made a 15-footer on 13,” thus adding value to his stance.

This short, 45-second-long interaction soon gained the attention of fans. After failing to make the cut at the Masters, the 37-year-old’s apparent fast-paced (perceivable rude) answers acted like a final nail in his coffin and led him to the reception end of widespread angst at the courthouse of public opinion on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The reigning Open Championship has faced the wrath of fans for slow play multiple times this year. Apart from taking 2 minutes and 41 seconds to hit a 96-yard shot that landed in the bunker at the TPC San Antonio, Harman has also been questioned for waggling a lot on the course before he hits a shot. Tracing from this recent history, a critical fan pointed out how things would have been so much different had he applied the same speed of answering questions in making his shots.  They wrote, “If he got up and hit the ball like he did this press conference, he would shave 30 minutes off his round.”

A fan wrote, “Teenagers when their parents are simply trying to have a conversation,” pointing out the childlike tantrum thrown by Harman in answering some simple, straight-to-the-point questions. Thus, they quickly compared his angst and reluctance to shed light on the matter of his last hole’s double bogey to that of a teenager.

Netizens were quick to reveal this side of the golf world. They wrote, “This side of pro golf exists! It’s fun to see it. The uber-angry-I-just-made-double interview. Four questions, 43 words in response, 45 seconds.” This drew attention to the lack of proper descriptive answers from the 3-time PGA Tour winner’s end to some performance-based questions, as well as his angry tone in the entirety of the short 45-second interview, which accounted for only 43 words in answers.

The 37-year-old also had to face the wrath of fans in the form of name-calling. Some nicknames used to widely refer to Harman on X were “Charmless Nerk” and “Angry Little Man,” thus remarking upon his perceivably disrespectful, angry, and short replies to questions asked of him at the end of the 45-second presser.
