Patrick Cantlay had an interesting year! He was accused of forming a coup d’état at the 2023 Ryder Cup for not being paid, and as a result, the infamous hat controversy was born! The golfer was also re-elected to become one of the player directors on PAC. The PGA Tour pro managed to stay consistently in the news, regardless of whether he intended to or not. But, as they say, all that meets the eye is not always true.

After months of side accusations, Cantlay has finally shared his side of the story and came out clean of all the presumptions made about him and his plans to ally with the PGA Tour.

The 2023 season was the first year Patrick Cantlay served as the player director for the PAC. After deciding to leave the PAC after one year, Cantlay was reappointed by unanimous voting and will be serving until 2026. However, the rumors say otherwise and claim Cantlay was trying to form a coup d’état, as Eamon Lynch reported in June 2023.

As opposed to the allegation, World No. 5 has stated, “I care a lot about the PGA Tour. When I joined the board, I viewed that as a responsibility.” Cantlay remarks that he has taken his job seriously and has made one goal: to represent all the PGA Tour members equally.

The 8x PGA Tour winner added, “My goal, being on the PGA Tour Policy Board, is to represent all the members, both current and future, to the best of my ability. And so that’s what I’ve been trying to do.” Moreover, he explained that all the player directors have been trying to work closely as a team to “make the best collective decisions that represent the interests of all the members.”

The accusation made by Lynch had made Cantlay the bad guy and someone who was taking advantage of the players or his position. However, the recent conversation interview with Dylan Dethier of Golf.com cleans the air about his stance on the PGA Tour and the preposterous allegations. But that was not the only allegation put on Cantlay in 2023.

Cantlay was accused of using players’ anger for his benefit.

After Jon Rahm‘s departure from the PGA Tour in early December 2023, Sports Illustrated released a column stating that “Patrick Cantlay is in control” of driving the negotiation between the PGA Tour and the investors. The piece of work pointed out that the 31-year-old was only catering to elites like himself and using the anger of the betrayed PGA Tour pros after the merger announcement to benefit him and stars like Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth.

Moreover, the article accused Cantlay of not being qualified enough to lead the negotiations and predicted the deal would blow up after Rahm’s departure. It also mentioned that such a happening would have Cantlay go to the LIV Golf and players wondering how it all transpired.

However, if you notice, that 31-year-old golfer was supposed to leave his position after a year. Although he was unanimously voted to serve three more years, as Cantlay explained, The voting speaks against the said accusation of Cantlay, only catering to a few golfers on the tour, and the SI claims of him leaving the tour in the end.
