At 67, is Bernhard Langer redefining what it means to be a senior athlete in golf?

“But that’s not me. I’m a very competitive person and I still enjoy being out there. I knew I could perform if I’m somewhat healthy.” This was what Bernhard Langer said ahead of the 2024 Charles Schwab Cup in Arizona. Bernhard Langer’s remarkable longevity in golf is a testament to his unwavering commitment to fitness and healthy living. Now at 67, the Mercedes-Benz ambassador continues to push himself—both on the course and in the gym.

While his focus has shifted from strength to mobility and stability, Langer’s commitment to fitness remains as strong as ever. Langer also boasts one of the most impressive senior golf records in history, with 46 wins since turning 50, including twelve senior major titles. Despite the healthy lifestyle that he chose for himself, the 67-year-old managed to tear his Achilles tendon while playing pickleball in Florida back in February. Although he has bounced back well, it is not a small injury to get over with.

With less blood flow, recovery takes much longer. The Achilles tendon, being one of the largest tendons in the body, makes for a particularly slow recovery process. For professional athletes, these injuries are often career-ending.

While his focus has shifted from strength to mobility and stability, Langer’s commitment to fitness remains as strong as ever. According to the UT Western Medical Center, they are “also treating more older people with Achilles tears than we did in the past, likely because people are staying healthy and active longer.”And with time the numbers only keep growing, and Langer was one of them.

Bernhard Langer has always defied the odds and etched his name in the golf world. And well, coming back after his Achilles Tendon surgery was no different. He is once again making it to the

headlines with his performance in Arizona.

Bernhard Langer will enter the 2024 Charles Schwab Cup in a solo lead

The 67-year-old player from Germany is teeing off at the Phoenix Country Club to clinch his forty-seventh victory professionally. He began the opening round with a great start carding two consecutive birdies. However, he wore off in the back nine and ended up carding a double bogey on the fourteenth hole. This brought his score to a 2-under 69. The second round saw him catch momentum, and he quickly compensated with nine birdies but had two bogeys, nonetheless.

But his score was an impressive 7-under 64, so far one of his best performances. This brought him to the top of the leaderboard after the Friday round. He continued his momentum through Saturday, and is currently on the top after fifty-four holes, with an accumulated score of 13-under. However, he still has to buckle up as Steven Alker is just one stroke behind him as they enter the Sunday finals. Do you think the German player will be able to grab the trophy in a few hours? Stay tuned to find out!
