Can Lilia Vu really dethrone Nelly Korda, or is Korda's reign far from over?

Nelly Korda’s win at the 2024 FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship in March cemented her position at the top of the Rolex Ranking list. This was the first time she grabbed the No. 1 spot since August 2023. She defeated Ryann O’Toole in the Sunday playoff to bag the win. And well, ever since, she has been pretty much invincible on the list.

Following her, is American professional golfer Lilia Vu, with total points of 314.62. She had a 141.75 point difference with Nelly Korda, despite having played more events than her in the 2024 season. Now the question is, with the ongoing final major of the season, if Vu succeeds in defeating Nelly Korda on Sunday, will she be able to grab her spot?

After two successful rounds of the ISPS HANDA AIG Women’s Open, Nelly Korda has taken the lead. Scoring nine birdies and just one bogey in the first two days of the championship, she is now at 8-under, three strokes away from Lilia Vu and Charley Hull. The Rolex No. 2 player still has her chance to bag the lead if she gears up.

However, even if she ends up winning the final major of the women’s circuit, she will still not be able to grab Korda’s position in the standings. The AIG Women’s Open gives 100 points to the winner. If Vu wins, she will be at 364.62. That will make her 81.75 points away from Korda.

Lilia Vu missed two back-to-back majors this year. She was removed from the U.S. Women’s Open field list, as first noted by Golfweek. Vu, a four-time winner in 2023 and the tour’s Player of the Year has battled a back injury this year and withdrew before the start of her title defense in April’s Chevron Championship. However, she did indeed come back with a bang!

What’s your perspective on:

Can Lilia Vu really dethrone Nelly Korda, or is Korda's reign far from over?

Have an interesting take?

As she entered the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in June, she finished with a T2, with Miyu Yamashita, and Ko Jin-young, one stroke away from Amy Young at 1-over. However, her second Major appearance did not turn out to be as great. At the Amundi Evian Championship last month, Vu finished for a disappointing T26 with eight other players. She scored a 5-under, 14 strokes away from the winner Ayaka Furue. But the flame in her is still ignited and Vu is aiming to defend her title at the AIG Women’s Open. So, there are possibilities that she will be able to surpass Nelly Korda in Scotland to lift the trophy!
