Smith has been on the news ever since he joined the LIV Golf league. The golfer lost a ton of his fans and faced harsh criticism back when he made the decision to ditch the PGA Tour. But seemingly Smith has gotten too comfortable with his new life that his performance is not his biggest concern now.

It is so because a night before the Australian Open, Smith was found having beers with his friends at the Moonee Valley Racing Club in Melbourne. And as a result of having way too many beers than he could handle, the golfer missed the cut. What happened on the field was that Smith had a total of 2-over after 36 holes.

And so he figured that his score was not good enough to take him forward. Hence, accepting his luck, Smith went on to the pub and started having beers. But to his surprise, his game was, in fact, good enough to take him through to play on Saturday.

“I wasn’t really expecting it,” he said“I was pretty quick to the pub and I was probably a few too many beers deep and then realized we had an early tee time, so I got back on the waters and was a good boy for the rest of the night.”. But due to obvious reasons, Smith couldn’t make much of a difference in the third round. Even after shooting 1-under 69 at Victoria Golf Club, world no. 3 missed the secondary cut at 1 over. “I thought I had it in me today and hit lots of good golf shots, and just couldn’t really capitalize,” he said. “Just not my week.”

Why did Smith join LIV Golf?

The former Open Champion was one of the names in LIV Golf’s biggest signings ahead of LIV’s Boston event. Although he didn’t talk much about his deal, reports peg the amount to be around $100 million. Noticeably, fans wanted to know why Smith decided to join the Saudi circuit out of nowhere. There had been rumors of the same for a long time, but there was no confirmation from the player until the announcement was made.

In his response to why he made that choice, Smith said“The biggest thing for me joining is [LIV’s] schedule is really appealing,”. The golfer explained how he was not in it for the money, but for the short schedule. “I’ll be able to spend more time at home in Australia and maybe have an event down there, as well,” he stated.
