Pro golfer is at it again taking her own sweet time to play a stroke. The pace of play has been a major point of discussion ever since the new slow play policy was suggested to the PGA Tour headquarters a few weeks ago. Many professional golfers have been criticized for their lack of concern about the pace of play.

One player who received a lot of backlash for the issue was Patrick Cantlay. He has been on the receiving end of many negative comments due to his incredibly slow-playing approach on the course. Pros like Brooks Koepka, Colin Montgomerie, and others have been quite vocal about Cantlay’s lack of consideration.

This time around, another infamous slow player has come to the light yet again. We go to women’s golf to see Carlota Ciganda, the Spanish LPGA player who has often been criticized for her bad time management on the course.

@Golfingbrock shared a video on their X account showing Ciganda lining up for a stroke at the Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf. Playing in the Andalucia Open de Espana 2024, the Patrick Cantlay-esque LPGA player, Ciganda was on the 15th hole when the incident occurred. The caption read, Players are supposed to have 40 seconds to hit a shot. Ciganda routinely doubles that time and the tours won’t do anything about it. So why post about it? Because whether it’s on tour or at your local muni, slow play is a plague that must be eradicated.”

After the previous stroke was played, the video showed a timer that started playing as soon as it was Ciganda’s turn to hit. To everyone’s surprise, Ciganda took 1 minute and 25 seconds to complete the stroke. That was 45 seconds more than the 40 seconds given to every player.

Is Carlota Ciganda's slow play a strategic move or just plain inconsiderate to fellow golfers?

Granted that she did end up winning the tournament in the end. But the extremely slow-paced play observed by the Andalucia Open de Espana 2024 champion was totally unacceptable. And fans shared their displeasure with the way Ciganda wasted time.

This is not the first time Carlota Ciganda has been criticized for slow play. @GolfBurner provided a solution for how LET and LPGA can deal with the situation. They said, “Amen. The only way to change it is to start hammering people with strokes, and it needs to start at the AM level yesterday,” hinting that the players should have already been fined after this video came to the surface. @Choppodong1 recommended a solution that might work, “Rules aren’t rules without enforcement. How people miss this from speeding to defunding police is beyond me,” suggesting that maybe penalizing the players for slow play might make them play quickly.

@Noles31BB has a theory about slow players that just might be valid: “One of the main issues with ultra slow players is that if they hit a bad shot, it’s because they didn’t take enough time(in their minds). Or if they hit a good shot, it validates the time spent. Lose/lose,” as he suggested that there is no point arguing with such players. @StonewallSieve shared his views on how Ciganda should have played the stroke: “This should’ve taken to the :20 max. I can’t for the life of me understand why it takes longer than that WHEN YOU’RE ALREADY BEHIND THE BALL WAITING.” @TronCarterNLU thinks that the rules are being overlooked as she said, “This is cheating. Plain and simple.” They stated that Ciganda broke the rules by going over 40 seconds and that she was cheating on the course. @rickeydidio had a more extreme suggestion to provide as he said, “Let’s not mess around with fines over the next 5-10 years. Just go straight for DQs on a 3rd bad time per event,” as they suggested that the player should be disqualified if they go over the 40-second time limit more than 3 times during the entire event.
