The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is just around the corner, but controversy is already swirling around the golf world. Recently, US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick spoke out against the DP World Tour’s partnership with the PGA Tour and his words are sparking heated debate.
Fitzpatrick is still fuming about the European Tour’s partnership with the PGA Tour. So, what’s behind his frustration? Last year’s BMW PGA Championship left a sour taste in his mouth. PGA Tour players received invitations to participate, leaving out certain European Tour players who had worked energetically to maintain their playing privileges.
Fitzpatrick’s criticism of the European Tour’s partnership with the PGA Tour centers around fairness and respect. He believes European Tour players should take priority in their events, especially flagship tournaments like the BMW PGA Championship.

“I thought that was absolutely absurd that, that even went through,” he said.
However, the golfer is quite content with the format of the upcoming tournament, as he participates for the 10th time. Matt Fitzpatrick feels familiar with the layout and doesn’t need to put in as much preparation and notes that the setup differs from a major championship like the Open, creating a more relaxed atmosphere.
“I think this is my tenth time playing this tournament. So had a lot of experience at the Old Course. Don’t feel I need to put as much effort in because I know what’s going on. Obviously the setup is a little different to an Open Championship-type setup. More relaxed, which is nice,” said the golfer in an interview with the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
The fans are excited to see the golfer as much as the golfer is excited to showcase his skills.

Matt Fitzpatrick ‘just wants to enjoy’ the upcoming tournament
Matt Fitzpatrick returns to Scotland, seeking to defend his title at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. This week marks Fitzpatrick’s eighth appearance in the tournament, held across three iconic links courses. Currently, 123rd in the Race to Dubai Rankings, Matt Fitzpatrick needs a convincing performance to break into the top 70 and secure a spot in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.
Fitzpatrick is motivated by the chance to become the second player, after Tyrrell Hatton, to win consecutive individual titles. “Listen, if there’s one tournament I want to play, it’s the DP World Tour Championship,” Fitzpatrick said. “My goal this week is to qualify, but I understand it’s a long way off. My expectations are low; I just want to enjoy it.”

Despite three top-ten finishes worldwide this season, including at THE PLAYERS Championship, Matt Fitzpatrick considers 2024 one of his toughest years since turning pro in 2014. Moreover, he will start his title defense this Thursday alongside top players like Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, and Billy Horschel. With extensive golf experience, particularly at St Andrews, Fitzpatrick feels more relaxed in his preparations.
