The drama between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour is here to stay. And, no, we are not talking about the endless merger talks but the golfers themselves. And if two golfers have been pretty vocal about the men’s professional golf, then they are Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy. Recently, Rahm said he’d like a world-tour approach in golf–a “dream scenario” idea that McIlroy seemed to echo in 2024.

However, after a recent appearance, Jon Rahm seems to have lost that support among many golf enthusiasts. How? Well, first the context. On Friday, the Saudi-backed league announced a new series giving fans a BTS into the league, its teams, and its players. Accordingly, they released their first trailer–with Jon Rahm taking up most of the space. Just like Rahm, Louis Oosthuizen, Sergio Garcia, and Bubba Watson were faced with the same narrative that they have lost their competitive edge.

The other golfers had their answers ready, however, it was Rahm’s statement that grabbed the most attention. Standing against the argument of “not caring about golf anymore,” the golfer replied angrily: “Bullsh*t. I don’t care.” After that, he seemed to calm down but kept his stern attitude by adding, “Don’t ever tell me I don’t care about golf!” We have already taken a look at his idea of bringing the sport to a wider audience, however, these accusations stem because of the massive deals the golfers took before signing off with LIV Golf and the eventual divide in men’s professional golf.

How? Players like Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, and Jon Rahm left the Tour and joined hands with LIV Golf. As a result, the Tour banned them, and the defectors, in return, sued the PGA Tour. All within a span of a few years. Additionally, the LIV golfers are often accused of choosing money over golf with their reported deals being as high as $600 million! On top of that, Rahm has agreed that LIV Golf has the best golfers, a disputable statement. With the merger talks high in the air and the new LIV series out next month, these conversations will likely never end. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at what the fans are saying.

Golf fans are not at all amused by Jon Rahm and his claims

Some fans are excited for the series, no doubt. However, having watched the trailer, some golf enthusiasts couldn’t help but dig into his statements. One of the fans pulled the ultimate Masters Tournament card. And, yes, it is brutal. The fan said: “If you care then prove it at the Masters by showing up on the leaderboard.” Ouch! We are approaching the Masters in less than two weeks, and with that, we will be seeing 12 LIV golfers competing at Augusta National. However, last year 13 LIV golfers competed at The Masters with their best finish coming at T6 with Bryson DeChambeau. Jon Rahm, on the other hand, was far behind. At T45!

The next two fans took it to a whole new level and pointed at the league in general. They said: “Lol, gheeeeyyyyy!!! I’m sure their 34 viewers will absolutely love this!” and “Maybe he cares about golf but no one cares about liv. No one watches this garbage.” Here’s the thing, we are all aware of LIV Golf viewership struggles. For instance, its final round in Singapore drew a paltry 34,000 viewers. Similarly, the final round in Riyadh drew a staggering 40,200 average views. Not a good look at all!

What’s your perspective on:

Does Jon Rahm's passion for golf make him a hero or a hothead in this debate?

Have an interesting take?

Another fan took a dig at the golfer himself, saying, “John we know you care about golf. You just care about money more. No judgement on that, not many would pass up that money.” Jon Rahm is a good player, without a doubt. He has had 22 professional wins, including two major wins at the 2021 U.S. Open and 2023 The Masters. However, despite this wealth of performance, Rahm reportedly signed off with LIV for a $600 million deal.

Last but not least, another fan drew comparisons between Full Swing and LIVToWin. “So their version of Full Swing that they copied from the PGA Tour, got it lol.” Similarly to the new LIV series, the Netflix series Full Swing focuses on the inside and out of the golf world, including any scandals the golfers have faced. We don’t know what else this new series will focus on, however, our eyes are set on it nonetheless!
