The end of the 2024 season proved to be disheartening for RangeGoats GC captain, Bubba Watson. Watson had a terrible season in LIV Golf with only 1 finish within the top 20 of all the events. Besides that, his performance has been nowhere near his reputation of being a top player. Being at the bottom of the leaderboard at the end of the season meant that Watson might get relegated from LIV Golf despite being a captain.
Moreover, Watson and RangeGoats GC also lost Thomas Pieters to Dustin Johnson‘s team a few weeks ago. The two-time LIV Golf leaders, 4 Aces GC were looking to replace Pat Perez, whose contract is due in January 2025.
If that wasn’t enough then Bubba Watson couldn’t make the cut at last week’s Asian Tour event as well. The abysmal 2024 season ensured that he didn’t qualify for the 2024 Saudi International tournament.

After facing so many disappointments, Bubba Watson must be pleased to learn that he might be retained by the RangeGoats GC as the captain for the 2025 season. As tweeted by @flushingitgolf, “The LIV Golf free agency period is getting active this week, with multiple announcements due to be made. The majority of “open zone” players have been re-signed, but there are new recruits too. Bubba Watson, who was relegated, is not playing the Promotion’s Event and is expected to return as playing captain for Range Goats GC. The full field for the Promotion’s Event will be released later today.”
The insider channel also stated “As usual, I will do everything I can to report this information as soon as possible with full confidence in the accuracy. More updates when I get them 👍” It seems that that alls not bad for Watson. While confirmation of his retainment will be released by @flushingitgolf or any other source so soon, the 46-year-old can start focusing on finding a replacement for the outgoing Thomas Pieters.
Speaking of replacements, Bubba Watson has also mentioned how if Rory McIlroy decides to make the jump, he would welcome the Irishman without a second thought. Speaking to Bunkered, Watson said, “I’m not looking just for an American. Rory might call me and say ‘hey man, can I have a spot?’ I don’t know. That’s what I’m saying. We’ve got to wait and see.” Having McIlroy replace Thomas Pieters will be a dream move for any LIV Golf team captain, let alone Bubba Watson. Whether it does ever happen or not, only time will tell.

Where will Bubba Watson find a replacement? Well, as @flushingitgolf mentioned, the Promotion Event’s list will be released in the next few hours. The event allows players to register and participate in a 4 round contest. The top 3 players on the leaderboard will get promoted to LIV Golf and may be a part of a team or turn into a wildcard player. However, Watson will have to act quickly knowing that other teams will also be paying close attention to the event.
