Did Bubba Watson's 'childlike' behavior cost him a solid partnership with Ted Scott?

While spending 15 years together, Bubba Watson certainly had a successful career with his former caddie, Ted Scott. Although he is now with Scottie Scheffler as his bagman and Watson is part of LIV Golf, their bond remains. While reminiscing, Scott shared something interesting about Watson, and the story dates back to 2023.

It happened a year ago when Ted Scott was on the Leett Putting Hub YouTube channel. They talked about a lot of things in the 40-minute-long video, and Scott was also asked about the visualization process of Bubba Watson. As a response, Scott said, “My good friend Mark Bull once told me to be childlike in, you know, in your learning process.” After talking about his friend, Scott further talked about Watson, saying, “And that’s probably greatest Bubba’s greatest asset; he’s very childlike.”

Later, he also explained the reason behind it, saying that while playing on the greens, Scott becomes a coach as well and dives deeper into analytics. However, the golfer doesn’t do any of that; “Bubba doesn’t dive into any of the analytics. He just literally puts and lets the feedback be his coach,” said Watson’s former caddie.

Instead of using stats, Bubba Watson “lets the feedback be his coach.” Scott mentioned that Watson takes his experience very seriously as everything he has learned so far is from experience, memory, and feel.  Scott also said that LIV star is a fast green putter, and with him, “there’s no, you know, is this two inches or three inches? You know? I remember the last time this putt was this. It’s just this looks like it’s going to go here.”

Ted Scott called this ability  a “visual feel” and later called the golfer an artist, saying, “In my experience, most of the greatest putters now, I think with aim point, that’s what’s changed some of that, but most of the greatest putters in history were more feel, almost artistic type players, you know, and Bubba certainly fits into that.”

And seems true, since Bubba Watson and Ted Scott were partners for 15 years from 2007 to 2021. During their time together, the golfer claimed 12 PGA Tour wins, including two Masters. In 2021, Watson announced that he and his caddie would be parting ways at the end of the season. Scott went on to become Scottie Scheffler’s caddie, while Watson hired Gabe Sauer. But what do you think is the reason?

Have an interesting take?

During the whole 2021 season, Watson was suffering from a wrist injury and was unable to claim any titles. Scott approached Watson to discuss their future as a team; that was when the golfer made the decision. The 2x Masters champion realized that he was not in great health and it was time to say goodbye. While giving credit to Ted Scott and their 15-year-old partnership, the golfer shared a message on X (back then Twitter).

“After 15 incredible years together, Teddy and I have decided to end our on-course partnership. We recently came to the decision after some deep talks, not only about golf but life. When we met, I don’t think we ever imagined how much we would experience together. Teddy deserves more credit than anyone can imagine for our success on the golf course, but I am just as grateful for his friendship and the way he has helped me grow as a person,” said Bubba Watson via post.

It all happened in September of 2021. After two months, in November Ted Scott became Scottie Scheffler’s caddie. Not long after that, in April 2022, Scheffler won his first major title at the Augusta National. Interestingly, like Watson, Scheffler is also a two-time Masters champion after winning this year at the Masters.
