Bryson DeChambeau continues to rule the Masters leaderboard. Even after scoring 1-over-par in Round 2 on the windy second day, the 30-year-old remains focused on the process rather than the outcome in his hopes of giving himself “a chance at the weekend.”

In all of this, one thing that has helped him immensely is his choice of irons, which are specially curated by him and only recently approved. He has admitted that “getting some equipment in my hands that works for me” has helped him make a Masters appearance different from all the times he has appeared at August National GC before.

But it has not been a walk in the park for the LIV Golf star to translate his dream of this skillfully curated equipment into reality. In fact, the irons that he decidedly put all his faith into got the stamp of approval and conforming only a handful of days before the start of the event. He admitted, “I’d say Monday, we — well, early Tuesday is when I finally got the full set approved and conforming.”

Earlier, the Scientist faced problems as “the groove edge was just too sharp” which rendered the iron set non-conforming before it was rectified and improved to fit the USGA standards. But despite his newfound difficulties, his concept is not so new. The California-born pro golfer has “had this idea for a long, long time,” and it first came to him in 2020.

The USP of this set of irons remains its “different curvature on the face than other equipment,” which allows DeChambeau’s “mis-hits to go a little straighter sometimes.” Talking about the test of the Augusta National GC that these clubs are holding up, the 2020 U.S. Open winner also added, “The set I’m using are great. They are fantastic. Not having any issues with them, and looking forward to a good weekend.”

But what has the Crushers GC captain learned about himself in the last two days of his performance at the Masters using his self-curated pieces of equipment?

What has Bryson DeChambeau learned in the past two days?

An equipment change of such magnitude right before the Masters is surely a difficult decision for many. But months of practice beforehand and good luck seem to have been on his side in the past two days. This has helped him learn that he is a “little bit better of a wind player” than he expected.

In his own words, “I feel like the wind was just a difficult test of golf that I’m usually not really good at. I’m pretty poor at wind golf. But getting some equipment has really helped me settle in and be comfortable with certain shots.”

DeChambeau’s current position as T1 with a score of 6-under-par seems to be enough to say that he has a good shot over the weekend. It remains to be seen whether his clubs will fetch him a win or not. But in case of any difficulty, he seems to have a backup set in the form of his PING i330s, which have proven to do well for him in the past.
