659 balls were hit by Bryson DeChambeau in the three days leading into the Masters, far more than anyone else. Despite his extensive practice, the data reveal that there’s no significant correlation between the number of balls hit and performance. In fact, players who hit between 200-250 balls seemed to have a slight edge, but DeChambeau’s outlier performance skews the data for those who hit over 300 balls, per Golf Digest.

The study found that hitting more golf balls before the tournament didn’t necessarily translate to better performance. Players like Scottie Scheffler, the defending Masters champion, also hit the range late, dispelling the myth that it’s a sign of panic. According to the data, the sweet spot seems to be around 75 practice balls per day for three days, and hitting more than that might not be beneficial. DeChambeau’s impressive performance despite hitting a large number of balls suggests that it ultimately comes down to individual preference and needs. However, it seems the number was quite larger than what reports had suggested earlier.

“1029. Number of balls Bryson DeChambeau hit on the range this week,” read the latest tweet by Golf Digest. And it is a surprise, we know. When the golfer was asked about why he had to use this many golf balls, Bryson DeChambeau revealed that he hit 393 balls on the range after feeling his iron game wasn’t quite there. “Just felt like I wasn’t all the way there with my iron game and felt like I needed to be a bit more precise,” DeChambeau said. He wanted to be more precise, so he kept hitting balls until he got the feel right. “Came out here and hit some golf balls, hit however many I hit — it was a lot — and got some stuff dialed in and figured out so that’s what makes me comfortable. Once I get that certain feel, play that draw, it’s what makes me comfortable.”

Well, golf fans are surely finding the whole case amusing as they are taking a dig at the LIV Golf superstar.

Bryson DeChambeau is being ripped apart in the comments

Starting off strong with what one fan said, “Still down one green jacket 🤣🤣🤣”, while the other said, “Tiger did that daily.” Well, Tiger Woods indeed prepares for tournaments by hitting 1,000 shots per day, but this doesn’t necessarily mean 1,000 drives on the range. Instead, he breaks it down into various practice sessions, including hitting 100 balls on the range, 300 chip shots, and 600 putts, all aimed at building muscle memory and developing feel and sensation. This intense practice regimen has clearly paid off, given his record-equalling 82 PGA Tour wins. “When I’m getting ready for tournaments, I make sure that each and every day I have 1,000 contacts with the club,” he had said back in 2023.

What’s your perspective on:

Does Bryson DeChambeau's ball-hitting marathon prove dedication or just a misguided approach to practice?

Have an interesting take?

One fan said, “My arms would disintegrate!”, while the other said, “Should’ve spent more time putting lmao.” Well, the golfer will disagree with that as DeChambeau’s iron play was off the mark on Sunday at Augusta National, and he struggled all day, hitting long left approach after long left approach, ultimately carding a three-over 75 that dropped him into a tie for fifth. What’s more, DeChambeau revealed that his playing partner Rory McIlroy was eerily focused, barely interacting with him throughout their round, not even exchanging words when signing their scorecards. Despite the lack of conversation, DeChambeau did express sympathy for McIlroy after his double bogey on 13, saying, “I wanted to cry for him.”

One fan said something that may be going on in everyone’s mind as they wrote, “I thought golf was about taking less shots.” A game that equates winning with fewer shots, does hitting more in practice make that possible? Well, in DeChambeau’s case, that didn’t pan out well. So, what do you think about DeChambeau’s new record in hitting golf balls? Let us know in the comment section below!
