Sports are a means of escape from the humdrum of everyday life. Golf, in particular, is a kind of sport that not only distracts but also helps hone skills of concentration, attention to detail, and more. However, in a town in England, the sport served more than a mere recreational or professional purpose!

In Wiltshire, England, golf became a solution to a problem. The versatility of the sport, coupled with an eagerness to play while solving a menacing issue, made it the perfect way out of a bad situation.

In the crowded streets of a town in Wiltshire, England, a man named Ben Thornbury faced a dilemma. The streets were littered with potholes and were taking forever to be fixed. Thornbury could either wait around for the local council to address the issue or take matters into his own hands.

Since the council was taking its sweet time and their responsiveness was less than satisfactory, he opted for the latter and came up with an ingenious solution.

A gardener by profession, albeit part-time, Thornbury wanted to force the council into claiming accountability for the damage on the road as well as the threat to local businesses. A sign was erected at the junction of Malmesbury High Street that read, “Wiltshire Council, you’re a disgrace. Fix the potholes.” Beneath it was another makeshift sign declaring, “High street crazy potholes golf now open.”

The busy street, which was being used as a golf course, definitely drew the required attention, and the council swiftly responded. They informed the part-time gardener that the Pothole Fund of the Department of Transport had granted them a whopping £3.6 million in funding. Furthermore, they declared that they would refurbish the street, so there would no longer be a problem.

The pothole course may just be an innovative solution

Although Ben Thornbury’s idea to use the potholes to play a street-wide golf game was meant to force the Wiltshire Council into heeding their issues, which it did, his spectacular solution is inspired. Many celebrities, including former WBC Cruiserweight Champion Tony Bellew, have often said that the youth in the United States should be offered opportunities to learn golf. The problem stated is that club memberships are too expensive, which prevents many aspirants to the sport from heartily partaking in devoted gameplay.

Following Thornbury’s example could solve this problem. Although it doesn’t have to be golf on potholes, playing on quiet streets in suburbs or on roads that are blocked using golf mats and clubs could be fruitful. Even parks and other play areas could easily be converted into temporary golf courses with public funding in order to keep the youth motivated and teach them useful skills.
