Tiger Woods and Shonda Rhimes teaming up—Is this the ultimate power move in sports and entertainment?

If you think Bridgerton was the only accomplishment that Shonda Rhimes would get in 2024, then, dearest reader, you are wrong. Shonda Rhimes has declared her involvement with the Tiger Woods-backed upcoming golf league, TGL. As bigger names are pouring in from across different industries in TGL such as Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, Woods’s business threatens even LIV Golf’s reputation for its highest purses. Amidst this, the famous television producer and screenwriter Shonda Rhimes chooses to listen to her golf calling.

Rhimes shared an Instagram post where she wore a T-shirt that said, “In my golf girl era.” Then she proceeded to share the exciting news about her new ownership of an LA group. She said, I’m beyond excited to announce my involvement as the newest owner of Los Angeles Golf Club, the inaugural team in the @tglgolf league. I can’t wait to bring my passion for golf to this incredible venture. Joining this team is an honor, and, as someone who believes in the power of storytelling and community, I’m eager to see how we can elevate the game together. Let’s tee off on this new journey. We are LAGC. #Wearelagc #LosAngelesGolfClub.

Rhimes will be joining the sensational siblings Serena and Venus Williams, as well as Alexis Ohanian Sr., as the owner of the LA team, which is one of the original six teams that TGL has established so far. Along with them, the Antetokounmpo brothers, Giannis, Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex, are also part owners of the LA club.

Unlike LIV Golf’s clouded discrepancies with the PGA Tour, TGL has made it clear that it wishes to be in partnership with the PGA Tour as only the pros are playing on TGL. To make participation easier for the golfers, the games will be played on Tuesday nights so as not to hinder players’ PGA Tour participation.

Rhimes wishes to elevate the game, and the TGL founder, TMRW Sports, has made the right moves to make it happen. The latest hike in Woods’s business venture shows another positive side that can help elevate fan expectations of TGL even before it debuts in January 2025.

$500 million to boost TGL’s power and experiments?

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy earlier secured a deal with Dynasty and Connect Ventures, where they agreed to co-lead the new golf venture. Moreover, it was also notified that the investment firm co-founded by K. Don Cornwell and Jonathan Nelson had valued TMRW Sports for a whopping $500 million even before it made its debut.

Additionally, much like its female owners, the Millionaire Standard League showed interest in elevating any gender-restricted prejudices in their tournaments. This means you might witness female golfers taking part in TGL shortly. TMRW Sports has been actively considering the possibilities of women’s golf.

Cornwell said, “Our goal has always been to partner with world-class management teams in sports that have a big following.” Then the co-founder of Dynasty added, “TMRW is taking intellectual property and applying it in such a way that’s going to not only get existing fans excited but bring new fans under the tent. And, since accessibility and bringing diversity into sport are among our priorities, it’s a great fit.”
