The GOAT debate between Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus is never-ending. On one hand, Jack has the most major wins with 18 trophies, on the other, Tiger has the most PGA Tour wins with 82 victories. As a result, everyone has their opinion and arguments ready to counter and portray their player as the greatest.

Almost everyone knows that there is no clear evidence to prove any player superior between these two. However, is it even fair to compare these two golfers from different generations? It’s a question that the Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee answered on a podcast. So let us see who, according to Chamblee, is the greatest golfer of all time.

Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus, who is the GOAT? Brandel Chamblee answers

Every golf expert gets bombarded with questions every time about their opinion on the GOAT debate. However, Brandel said that he looks at this debate from a different perspective. At the age of 44, Tiger Woods has a winning percentage of 22, while Jack Nicklaus has a winning percentage of 12.

However, it is imperative to note that Jack’s winning percentage came down due to his post-50 golf. But if you look at his winning percentage at 44, it was around 16, which is still six percent less than Woods. Notably, Chamblee believes things start to make sense when we look at the competition both these golfers had.

“Tiger’s three biggest competitors were Phil [Mickelson], Ernie [Els], and Vijay [Singh],” said Chamblee. Meanwhile, Mickelson’s win percentage was seven, Ernie had three, while Vijay’s was five. “So you put that together, and that’s a five percent win percentage of the three biggest players that he could face, revealed Brandel.

Furthermore, he says Jack faced Arnold Palmer, who had a winning percentage of 10, Billy Casper with 9, Gary Player at six. Additionally, there were even players like Lee Trevino and Tom Watson. Hence, Nicklaus had five or six players who had a win percentage more than the Tiger’s three biggest competitors.

“So Tiger did not have the competition that Jack had. Just didn’t have it. He did not ever face as dominant of players, as strong of players, both in terms of win percentage and in numbers, that Jack had. So, again, I think the gap gets a little narrower there,” said Chamblee.

Chamblee disagrees that only majors define who the greatest players are

“The idea that only majors define who the greatest players are is a ridiculous argument,” said Brandle. He says the legendary golfer Ben Hogan won only nine majors. However, he has only competed in the 58 while Jack Nicklaus has played 164 and won 18. Woods has played in 84 majors and has 15 wins.

Chamblee believes the guy who plays most majors will naturally win most. So ultimately, there is no right answer for the GOAT debate between Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. “That’s a debate that’s never going to end. Until Tiger ends his career, we’re never going to stop debating who was the best player,” concluded Brandle.
