So what’s new in the golf world? Despite Justin Thomas’s explosive letter calling for change, the PGA TOUR has just announced a significant update regarding The Genesis Invitational. Originally scheduled to take place at The Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, the tournament has been relocated due to the ongoing natural disaster in Greater Los Angeles.
The new venue for The Genesis Invitational is the South Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, a venue that has hosted numerous high-profile golf events, including the Farmers Insurance Open since 1968 and two U.S. Opens. The decision was made in a joint statement with Genesis, TGR Live, and The Riviera Country Club, with the TOUR citing respect for those affected by the disaster. The Genesis Invitational is expected to return to The Riviera Country Club in 2026. This year’s event will include Los Angeles-related relief initiatives, with details to be announced soon.
PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan, Tournament Host Tiger Woods, and Genesis President José Muñoz all expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to relocate the tournament and support the relief efforts. City of San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria also welcomed the event, citing the city’s honor in helping its neighbors in Los Angeles.

Fans are penning their frustration with the PGA Tour’s decision
Starting off strong with what one fan said, “example of another brain dead decision by the tour”, while the other added, “Hopefully it’s not super windy that week.” Well, Torrey Pines is notorious for being windy, and a recent example of that was seen at the Farmers Insurance Open, where gusts of up to 35 mph made playing conditions extremely challenging. Joel Dahmen, a popular tour player, was spotted wearing a normal golf cap instead of his signature bucket hat, which would have been a liability in the strong winds. Dahmen described the conditions as “wild” and noted that even the usually reliable Shotlink system was thrown off, underestimating the distance of his drive on the 13th hole by 38 yards.
The winds were so strong that play was eventually suspended for about 90 minutes, and when it resumed, the scoring averages told the story, with the South Course playing slightly easier than the North Course, despite its reputation for being tougher. But the hate did not stop there as one fan said, “No imagination. Zero willingness to try something different. Boring”, while the other said, “What a shame…..so many good courses out there and now we have to see Torrey again.” Well, yes, there are a lot of better choices than Torrey Pines, which is exactly why it’s hard to understand why the PGA Tour chose the same course again.

For instance, they could’ve gone for the Los Angeles Country Club, which has a rich history with the tournament, having hosted the inaugural Los Angeles Open in 1926, and has been the site of significant moments in golf history, including Jack Nicklaus’ pro debut and Tiger Woods’s first PGA Tour event. Alternatively, the Hillcrest Country Club, which hosted the tournament in 1932 and 1942, and has seen legendary golfers like Ben Hogan win there, could’ve been a great option. Another fan bluntly put it and wrote, “That is stupid,” and it’s safe to say the sentiment was shared by many other enthusiasts. But what do you think?
