One of the first stars on the PGA Tour to migrate to the Saudi-backed League in 2022, Koepka did so by agreeing to a deal worth $130 million as a signing fee. This led to a lot of people throwing jabs at the golfer, accusing him of leaving the tour for money. However, in a podcast with the American professional boxer, BS w/ Jake Paul, the Ryder Cup star disclosed the actual motive behind his actions.

The golfer recounted how it all started with Mickelson, who was big on “owning his own rights” as opposed to the situation on the tour, which had the say over the athletes. And then, a lot of professionals, including Koepka, followed his lead and went ahead with the PIF-funded circuit. But they did so in a bid to get more money.

Although the 33-year-old did mention that he also “signed up for the dough,” the 2023 LIV Golf Jeddah champ reasoned as to how he did so so that his “family is taken care of” if something were to happen to him the next day. Even though the 9X PGA Tour winner enjoys playing and winning at the game and “would do it for free,” he has that need to care for his loved ones, which is nothing short of “a big thing” for him.

The professional only came out to reveal the real reason behind his defection a little while ago. Moreover, till now, the golfer has been receiving a lot of flak from many, including Alan Shipnuck. However, there was also support that came in the 5X major winner’s way, from his own mother no less!
