Losing a family member is something many people do not wish to go through. But Camilo Villegas had to suffer from it in 2020. He went through the unimaginable grief of losing his 22-month-old daughter to a brain and spine tumor. The Colombian golfer dedicated his Butterfield Bermuda Championship to her. The golfer, however, was not alone in his grief journey.
Not many fans know about how his wife, Maria, handled the pain of losing her daughter. But the five-time PGA Tour winner shed some light on how his significant other took this loss. And he had nothing but honest praise and appreciation for her.

While sitting with Mark Immelman for his On the Mark Golf Podcast, Camilo Villegas shared the aftermath of losing his daughter. Villegas stated the whole experience was emotionally taxing on his whole family. He said, “To see her battle, to see my wife just handle the situation, to see the love and energy we were receiving was special.”
Looking back at the tough times and how they impacted his relationship with his better half, Villegas mentioned, “Dealing with this with your wife is not easy. You both grieve differently.” With his honest remarks, the golfer hinted that he and his wife went through some difficulties in their relationship because they had different ways to cope with the unimaginable that had happened. But the support Villegas and his wife gave each other helped them get back on their feet.
Camilo Villegas went on to share how the support he received from fans was motivating him during the tough times. Villegas also believes that his daughter is in the right place now. But most of all, he praised how his wife fared through the loss. “But it gave us purpose. My wife very quickly changed the Camilla Villegas Foundation to the Mia’s Miracles Foundation. And we started a new journey in life, a new purpose in life,” he shared. Since then, the couple has helped many with the foundation.

After the tragedy, Camilo Villegas and his wife decided to help families in dire situations. The foundation offers financial and emotional support to families whose children are suffering from illness. Mia’s Morning Walks, a project started by the foundation, has been awarded Givebutter’s Toasty Award for Best Campaign Story of 2020.
Furthermore, the foundation raised $83k in its first Givebutter campaign. The campaign had 300+ supporters and helped families in both the US and Colombia. The foundation expects to help more families in need in the coming years.
