McIlroy’s unusual haircuts from earlier days were a topic of discussion in an old interview.

This story dates back to November 2016, when Rory McIlroy was on the DP World Tour’s YouTube channel and attended Little Interviews. He was with the European Tour’s child star, Billy Jenkins. Billy showed McIlroy an old photo where the Irishman had long, curly, but messy hair. “What were you thinking?” Billy shouted. As a response, the golfer said, “It was a fear, Billy my dad was constantly telling me you got to get your haircut, you got to get your haircut and I kept defying him and I should have listened to him.” 

As soon as McIlroy accepted that he should have listened to his dad, Billy showed him another picture where the golfer had completely straight hair. After seeing that picture, the golfer had an embarrassing smile, and Billy asked, “And your mom says she wants your straight hair back?” After that, McIlroy laughed and said, “It’s so bad,” and later admitted, “Yeah that’s not good either it’s actually my girlfriend at the time and I think it was her straightener I borrowed.” Just like us, even Billy was shocked and asked, “What?” McIlroy admitted, “Yeah, not good.” 

Something similar happened back in 2020 as well. During the lockdown when all the shops were closed, the Irishman appeared on Golf TV with a funny and messy hairstyle and revealed that he wouldn’t let his wife cut his hair. However, after the shops were opened, he was happy and excitedly said, “I’m so happy that hairdressers and barber shops have opened again; I haven’t let my wife Erica anywhere near my hair since this whole thing,” as revealed on the BelfastLive website.

Yes, the incidents mentioned are certainly embarrassing for a professional athlete, but are they more humiliating than what happened to Rory McIlroy during the 2012 Ryder Cup?

They say no one knows how a single moment can give you something for a lifetime, and that’s what happened to Rory McIlroy during the 2012 Ryder Cup when the golfer nearly missed his final-round Ryder Cup tee time. As they headed into the final day of the tournament, the Americans held a comfortable 10-6 lead over the Europeans, needing only 4.5 points in singles to seal the deal. While McIlroy was getting ready, he suddenly heard a loud noise at the door.

It was a lieutenant and a European Tour representative, and they informed him that he had 30 minutes until his tee time. Rory McIlroy was in shock as he was confused between Eastern time and Central time, and it was one of the most embarrassing moments in his life. The situation was tough; the golfer later revealed, “I was panicking, I really was, Because it wasn’t just me that was going to have the disappointment of showing up late, it was 11 other guys on the team and the captain and the vice-captain. So it was a pretty scary moment,” he said to the New York Times.

His hotel was around 11 miles away from Medinah, and he had only 20 minutes. The PGA Tour sent a driver and a police escort to the hotel to get him at the venue on time. And guess what? This is how he met Erica Stoll, who is his wife now. While traveling, they chatted and the rest is history.
