In just two more weeks, the 2024 Player of the Year will be declared. Hideki Matsuyama took the trophy last weekend at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and 2000 points as well. Scottie Scheffler, who entered the field in first place in the Fed Ex Cup standings, finished at the TPC Southwind in fourth place.
Now, the top 50 players after St. Jude will be headed for the BMW Championship, which is the penultimate event for the FedEx Playoffs. It is scheduled to be hosted from August 22 to August 25 at the Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado.

Last year, South African player Thriston Lawrence won by a one-shot victory over Dutch pro Joost Luiten, taking home the trophy, and $340,000 from the $2 million purse. This year, the BMW Open has an increased purse of $2.5 million. The winner will take home the maximum share of it. Here are some of the top contenders who are vying for the win at the BMW Championship:
1. Scottie Scheffler
Scottie Scheffler is currently ranked No. 1 on both the FedEx Cup standings and the OWGR list. After completing all four rounds in the 60s at the TPC Southwind, despite missing out on the win, the American pro is still leading the list as the players will be entering the Castle Pines Golf Club. Scheffler is still in the lead. The 28-year-old appeared in 17 events this season and did not miss the cut in any of them. Additionally, he has landed himself in the top 10 in all but two of them (the American Express, and the US Open). Scheffler also bagged the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Do you think he will be able to take home the trophy at the BMW Championship?
2. Xander Schauffele
What’s your perspective on:
Can Patrick Cantlay defend his BMW Championship title, or will a new champion emerge this year?
Have an interesting take?
Xander Schauffele ended up missing the trophy at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week by just two strokes. He tied for the second position along with Viktor Hovland with an impressive 15-under. This season has been extraordinarily amazing for him. The 30-year-old bagged two major victories this season (the PGA Championship and the US Open) and clinched the second position. However, the 2020 Olympic gold medalist did not have a great run in Paris this year. He was tied for the ninth position, seven strokes behind the winner – Scheffler. Will he be able to get his redemption at the FedEx Playoffs? Only time will tell.
3. Hideki Matsuyama
Apart from the Scottish Genesis Open last month, Hideki Matsuyama made the cut for the rest of the events he participated in this season. The Japanese national not only made the cuts but also took home the winner’s title on two occasions. The 10-time PGA Tour winner missed the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, by just two strokes, and settled for a bronze. However, his appearance at the TPC Southwind was indeed stellar, and the golf community too has high expectations from him for the penultimate event. Now the question is, will he be able to fare according to their expectations?
4. Collin Morikawa
Collin Morikawa is currently ranked 4th on the FedEx Cup standings and will be heading to the BMW Championship this weekend. However, his performance at the St. Jude Championship did not align with his ranking. He finished with 60s in all three rounds. However, in the second round, he ended up bagging a 1-under 71. He finished the tournament with a T-22. The 27-year-old has been winless the entire 2024 season and will be eyeing his first trophy of the year at the BMW Championship. Will he finally be able to grab his win for the season?
5. Rory McIlroy

At the Paris Olympics, Rory McIlroy tied for the fifth position with LIV Golfer Jon Rahm. He missed out on making his country proud by just four strokes. However, the 38-year-old’s performance dropped once again. He bagged a T68 at the St. Jude Championship and was just two strokes away from dropping down to the last position. Thank God for his past performances this season, including a solo second position at the US Open and two wins on the American circuit—the Zurich Classic and the Wells Fargo Championship—which helped him clinch the spot among the top 5 in the standings and have further helped him qualify for the BMW Championship.
The St. Jude Championship was a rollercoaster of a ride. Given that only 30 players will finally enter the field of the Tour Championship, and for those who have not yet, the BMW Championship is the last option, the tournament will be all the more exciting. If you have not grabbed the tickets for the event, enjoy it at home.
