The final leaderboard of the BMW Championship has been the talk of the golfing community this Monday. Some players performed over and above expectations, while other players fell short. However, it’s hard to say which is the case with four-time major champion Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy finished fourth in the BMW Championship, with a score of 12-under. The results of the BMW Championship are consistent with McIlroy’s stats of late. His performances have been incredible mostly, but the best final results have rarely rewarded him kindly. A recent tweet has captured this situation and led to a dissection of what it means to watch McIlroy this season.

Rory McIlroy promises the moon and delivers rather…
One look at McIlroy’s stats this season would tell us he has always been a close contender for the title in most tournaments he has played. He has stayed in the top ten positions mostly, and many times in the top 5. Somehow, he has narrowly missed that final leap to land successfully in the number 1 position.

While he won four regular tournaments this season, he hasn’t won a single major title. This is despite standing within the top 10 positions in three of the majors. In fact, he has not won a major since 2014. As the idiom goes, Rory McIlroy has been promising the moon and been delivering…well, not exactly pebbles, but maybe shining bright lamps instead of the moon.
Considering his stats this season, a recent tweet shared a video from the tournament of McIlroy missing a very close putt by mere inches and stepping aside disappointed. The tweet semi-satirically describes the ‘Rory McIlroy’ experience for his fans: “1. Hit a towering iron from 245 to 3 feet 2. Miss the short eagle putt 3. Drain a 20 footer for birdie on the next hole.” All hell broke loose following the post.
McIlroy is deeply loved despite falling short on so many occasions!
The comment section turned out to be a mixed bag of agreements, criticism, and fond backing for Rory McIlroy. Here are some responses that stood out from the list. This one cracked us up. It was an honest reaction mixed with love, disappointment, and acceptance of the same. Touching!
Love him but he hurts me lol 😂

A fine example of constructive criticism, with the right blend of appreciation and suggestions for better performance. Looks like McIlroy has a resourceful bunch of fans.
Left knee Rory…it’s all about the left knee for you now…you’ve made such great progress this last year or so on greens but you still straighten it sometimes as you approach impact…

This is a sharp observation, and this kind of pattern recognition often sheds light on areas that need improvement. The reference to the left knee calls attention to Rory’s ‘golf swing trigger’. McIlroy straightens his left knee before he strikes the ball in an effort to shift his weight and hit the ball further. This tactic creates moments but gives him great long-distance prowess.
He seems to miss an awful lot of short downhill putts. Uphill ones he seems to bang them in.

With the final playoff for the FedEx Cup approaching, McIlroy needs to step up and fix his putting, so that his efforts do not go unrewarded. All the incredible shots to the freeway and the greens lose their value if these putts don’t click. The golfing world waits with bated breath to see what changes he brings to his game and how they reflect on the longevity of the golfing maestro.
