Will the Black Desert Championship's chaos overshadow the players' skills, or will someone rise above it all?

The much-anticipated return of a PGA Tour event to Utah, the Black Desert Championship, was one of the most talked about topics in recent times. The PGA Tour has returned to Utah after 61 years and every player and fan was excited to see what’s in store for them during the tournament.

The course has been cursed with a plague of misfortune for the first two days. Even before the tournament began, we had already witnessed many withdrawals from top pros. One of the most notable WD was that of Kevin Yu, the winner of the 2024 Sanderson Farms Champion. Yu announced his withdrawal from the Black Desert Champion a few days before the tournament began. Several other pros also unregistered themselves in the following days due to unknown reasons. By the commencement date, we had already witnessed a barrage of exits and changes to the Entry List.

Finally, on August 10th, we saw the first tee of the tournament. However, the play was stopped due to bad lighting, which caused a lot of distress. This led to delays and extensions of plays in round 2.

We witnessed more of the same on day 2 of the championship. By 7:07 PM, the darkness got so overwhelming that it led to the PGA Tour postponing the remainder of round 2. They announced that it would continue at 8:15 AM on the next day. This further postpones the beginning of round 3, which is now scheduled for 10:15 AM on the same day.

The amount of stress this might cause to a lot of players cannot be put into words. We can only share examples of how a few hours before the rescheduling announcement, PGA Tour’s X account had also posted Ryan McCormick’s withdrawal from the 2nd round of the tournament. The reason behind this WD was a wrist injury that the USA player faced on the 2nd day.

Many fans were also quite vocal about the disappointing conditions of the course and the toll it is taking on their favorite golfers. For now, let’s see what the leaderboard looks like for the next round.

Stephan Jäger, the German pro golfer, has performed well in the event so far. After two rounds of play, he has scored 65 and 63 to top the table at 14-under par 71. He faces tough competition from Adam Svensson and Ben Kohles, who is just a point below him. Svensson had an amazing first round, playing only 60 strokes. However, he couldn’t get substantially to his first-round score of -11, having played 69 strokes in round two.

Tournament favorite, Keith Mitchell has had an abysmal time so far. He sits at T113 with a score of +2. With a part of round 2 and two more days of action to go, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top and lifts the trophy on October 13th.
