Does Billy Horschel's no-nonsense attitude towards trolls make him a hero or a villain in golf?

They said Billy Horschel got no chill. Turns out, he got plenty; not unlike his colleague, Max Homa. The eight-time PGA Tour winner hit back at a fan who questioned his dress choice as well as his performance at the Tour Championship. The back-and-forth started after Horschel, a University of Florida grad, sported Georgia Tech colors to celebrate their victory against the Florida State Seminoles.

One user, whose X (formerly Twitter) bio reads, “Florida State University Graduate. Go Noles.” commented, “You’re the biggest nerd I’ve seen. Your play represents that.” It didn’t elude Horschel’s attention. The veteran golfer responded, “Guess he wasn’t a fan (of) my Georgia Tech colors on Tuesday either.”

The unrelenting user, however, hit back, criticizing Horschel’s performance at the Tour Championship. The 37-year-old carded a 2-over 73 on Thursday at East Lake Golf Club, marked by four bogeys and two birdies. Currently, he is the only player over par in the field. When the user pointed that out, Horschel quipped, “Someone has to be last. Not my first time being last. Still doing better than you though.

Perhaps the user should’ve known better. Billy Horschel has never been the one to hold back. Most recently, the eight-time PGA Tour winner dressed down a section of unruly fans at the WM Phoenix Open who were talking while Nicolo Galletti was trying to hit his shot.

Buddy when he’s over the shot shut the hell up man, come on, he’s trying to hit a damn golf shot here… It’s our f***ing job,” Horschel schooled the spectators while walking off the greens. Many applauded him for saying out loud what they had in their minds.

Moreover, five years ago, Horschel asked one fan to “Get the f**k out” at the 2019 Zurich Classic in New Orleans. The spectator strangely yelled, “Get in the water” after Horschel hit his ball.

Have an interesting take?

However, Billy Horschel has also received plenty of flak for being himself. His temper comes out often on the course, cursing himself for hitting a bad shot and throwing tantrums. But Horschel made a promise two years ago and has stuck to it.

Billy Horschel is who he is and he can’t help it

Asked about his temper ahead of the 2022 Zurich Classic, Horschel frankly admitted he wished things were a little different. He wished he could be like Scottie Scheffler. Even though he has his moments of rage, Scheffler can calm himself down. Horschel accepted he had done a better job at handling his temper in the last few years. But the public perception is not in his hands.

This is going to sound blunt, it’s going to sound bad, but if you don’t like it, I honestly don’t care anymore. I’ve cared enough over the last 13 years of my career to try and please everyone that watches me, and you know what, I can’t do anything more. I’ve done everything I can.” Quite truly, he was done.

Last month, a LIV Golf fan and a podcast host claimed Horschel is ‘fake’ and ‘inauthentic’. The PGA Tour pro, instead of lashing out, asked the user to talk to his colleagues. When that didn’t solve the disagreement, Billy Horschel replied, “Realized a long time ago can’t change everyone’s opinion.” The former Gator was right. Horschel will take off at 11.16 AM EDT on Friday. A strong performance might dent the criticism somewhat.
