Despite his mishaps, is Phil Mickelson still the ultimate inspiration for golfers like Billy Horschel?

What is the one thing you can’t forget even if you want to? Well, we don’t know about you, but Billy Horschel has a really good answer to this! He, however, will have to go to the 2021 Masters Tournament to recount that incident. But Horschel might want everyone to forget that moment! At least the whole scenario had a good ending as his playing partner in the tournament, Phil Mickelson, was left inspired by the shot that the eight-time PGA Tour winner had taken after encountering the ‘not so remarkable’ moment.

It was the Saturday round at Augusta’s pristine course and Horschel’s second shot at the par-5 13th hole didn’t turn out as the one he wanted. He hit the ball into Rae’s Creek and the mic caught his instinctive reaction. “What a s–t bounce. What a s–t f—ing bounce.” And if you think that was it, you’re wrong!

Later, in order to take the shot from the creek, Horschel went on to remove his socks and shoes and on his way down, he slipped and fell. His butt took a blow. However, the physical pain was way less than what he must have felt mentally. The 37-year-old stood on his feet immediately while smiling. In a post-Masters presser, Horschel remembered asking Mickelson if his trousers had gotten any stains to which he replied, “There may not be one there,” as he kept looking he then immediately said, “Yeah, there’s one there, sorry, buddy.”

The eight-time PGA Tour winner knew how social media worked. He knew that this incident would be a highlight on the internet, but Horschel still managed to score a birdie on that hole. The shot that he had taken from the creek impressed the lefty, which certainly was the “highlight of the day,” for Horschel. The 37-year-old said that Mickelson’s response to that shot was “I’m curious how he hit that.” Well, this was just one shot, but how did Horschel perform in the majors? Let’s take a look.

Billy Horschel’s performance in the majors

The first-ever major that Billy Horschel played was the 2006 US Open, where he missed the cut. However, he played it as an amateur, as he did not turn pro until 2009. His first-ever major as a pro was also the US Open in 2013, where he finished at T4. Since then, the eight-time PGA Tour winner has appeared in many majors.

Billy Horschel’s performance in most of the majors has not been remarkable as he has missed cuts multiple times. His only top-10 finish since the 2013 US Open came in 2024. He finished at T8 in the 2024 PGA Championship. Although Horschel has no majors in his record book as of June 2024, he might claim one before he swings his club for the last time.
