Billy Horschel: Outspoken truth-teller or the PGA Tour's latest puppet? What's your take?

Is the FedEx Cup Playoffs greater than the majors? Well, not everyone would seem to think so. But then again, Billy Horschel is not like everyone else. And surprisingly enough, the PGA Tour Pro couldn’t help but share the same opinion. The golfer, at T19 in the FedEx Cup standings going into the Jay Monahan-led PGA Tour’s upcoming tournament, put forward an unpopular stance that earned the ire of many in the community.

The golfer was spotted in an interview ahead of the 2024 BMW Championship, drawing a parallel between the recently concluded event in Memphis and the season’s final major at Royal Troon. More specifically, the athlete was alluding to the pressure he felt while playing at both events. He said, “I was more nervous last Sunday at FedEx (St Jude) than I was at The Open Championship trying to win a major.”

In addition, he also expressed how he wasn’t sure why he felt that way before highlighting how it should have been the other way around. “I don’t know why I was more nervous last week,” said Horschel before adding, “I should have been more nervous at the major at Royal Troon but, yeah, it’s important to me.”

Fans take savage digs at Billy Horschel

Not everyone in the community was a fan of what he said. A follower, who didn’t like what he put forth about the major swiftly came out and commented while bringing Rory McIlroy into the mix, With Rory down and out the #PGA needs a new mouthpiece.” The Northern Irishman was initially dubbed the “pseudo-spokesperson” of the Monahan-led circuit when the breakaway league came into being back in 2024. The golfer had opposed LIV Golf at every turn before making a complete U-turn, not to mention resigning from the Board. Although he is part of the transactional subcommittee at the moment, the athlete joined the same after failing to re-enter the Tour’s policy board.

Have an interesting take?

Billy Horschel was able to finish in the runner-up position at the 152nd Open Championship that took place at Royal Troon. He dished out a 7-under overall while tying himself with the likes of Justin Rose, and finishing two strokes behind Xander Schauffele, the champion who emerged victorious at the same time. A user hinted at the same while responding, “Seems like after the Open performance that Billy has become the face of the PGAT. May need to slow up there, old Billy,” while another just dubbed him “Insufferable.”

“He’s 100% lying but to each their own,” responded a golf enthusiast, all thanks to the remarks Billy Horschel made about the FedEx Playoffs. They didn’t stop there, as comments about him came pouring in, with another reacting, “Wonder what the PGA Tour paid him to say this.” The 37-year-old, meanwhile, only received $520,000 from the total $20 million prize purse that was set aside at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, owing to his T10 finish with figures of 1o-under overall.

Nevertheless, Billy Horschel sure did find himself in some troublesome waters as he dished out the comments, drawing a parallel between the 152nd Open and the event in Memphis. What about you? Do you agree with him?
